  • Should I stay or should I go?

So I got this temp job last month out of sheer boredom. It's very similar to what I used to do in NY for similar pay. Except that now we're in a different tax bracket so the take home piece of the pie is significantly smaller. This job is even more boring than sitting at home and watching daytime TV. Today I gave up pretending to be doing something and just surfed the web all day. The woman I work for doesn't seem to mind and actually appreciates not being bugged all day (I tend to keep asking if she has anything for me at least 5 times a day). I know I shouldn't complain about being paid for surfing the web but I hate waking up at 6am (it essentially makes me dead by about 9pm) and working full time doesn't leave much time for household tasks, so as a result the house is a mess, the fridge is empty and we've been going out a lot more in the past few weeks.

I can't decide if I should stay, it seems that they like me and the assignment is open-ended. It's not a bad company and I could learn something. Plus I finally get to wear all my work outfits. On the other hand, I miss my housewife days (I never thought I would), I miss having a nice clean home and homecooked meals every day. I also feel that figuring in all the extra expenses makes my paycheck simply laughable (as close to minimum wage). DH thinks I should quit, my mom thinks I should stay. What do you think?

I vote for go to part time. Best of both worlds. Sounds like they don't need you full time anyway, you'd have time to relax and do housework, and still bring home a little money

I'm going to try asking for that. I've thought about it too. The only weird thing is that when yesterday I asked the woman I work for if I can leave early (I get paid by the hour) since I had nothing to do, she didn't really like that. Why she prefers me surfing to going home I have no idea.

What about finding volunteer work that you do? It would be more flexible, and still give you a sense of purpose and stave off boredom.

I'd level with the woman- tell her you can do all of the work she's paying you to do in half the time.

I keep telling my people here that I'm seriously not all that busy and they can't imagine how. OK. I've tried.

Is part of your job to be "on call" in case they need something? My co-worker subcribes to this job duty. If I have nothing for our coordinator to do and do not foresee getting my a$$ in gear to get my crap together in order to be able to give her something to do, I tell her to go home if she wishes. Not so with co-worker. She is a last minute kind of person and gets very upset when our coordinator is not available when she "needs" her. Because "you never know when some thing will come up"
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I'll try brining up part time again next week. For the record, I asked to leave early at 3 and she ended up going home at 4:30. I don't know enough to be the on-call person and it seems that nothing important ever happens after 2pm. She's also fully aware that today for example I finished everything before lunch and then pretty much surfed (the 5 non firewalled websites) until 5. But hey at least they're paying me for that.

I don't really have an opinion --- I just wanted to say that every time I read this I get the song in my head.

                        Me, too!

I think I would try for a part-time deal. You are in-charge at this point. You don't need the money that bad or need to get up at 6am. When is your gig supposed to end?

Well, at least I managed to provide some entertainment around here.

My gig is on a month to month basis, so far until end of March and then we'll see. I'll see how the next few weeks go and make a decision then. I might as well stick out until the boards are done because DH is almost never home (studying in the library or with others) and when he is, he's so out of it he doesn't notice the mess or the empty fridge. But once he's done studying, he'll have tons of free time and I want to enjoy it with him. So for now I'll just cruise the web while getting paid for it and then we'll see what happens. One day at a time.
