  • and the phone rings...

I was out at a friend's place last night with a bunch of people when the phone rings around 8:30. Its one of the private schools that I have applied to be a long term 1st grade sub for. "Can you come in Wednesday at 12:30 for an interview for a third grade long term sub position?" they ask. I tell them I am out of town, but I can come in Friday. They are closed Friday. SO they offer to do a phone interview on Wednesday at 12:30. I am buckling down and looking over every single interview question possible. I get so nervous with interviews I just simply forget everything. It really stinks that I am going to be out of town for the interview, and its third grade, one of my FAVORITE grades! (Ties with second) I know its just a sub job, but it could lead to a permanent job. I'm very excited, but I know that the phone interview could limit my chances with others going in face to face. Here's to hoping they like me enough to have me come in for a face to face after the phone interview.

Ok ramble over Just wanted to share some good news after my previous I don't have a job pity part post

My one and only phone interview got me the job I have now. (And they didn't realize it would be a phone interview until I called in....eep!) The thing I love about phone interviews is that you can have a cheat sheet in front of you of things you want to mention.

      You'll do great!

Thanks! And believe me, I am working on that cheat sheet right now. Highlighting, outlining, marking. Hopefully I am working on it so hard that when it comes to the interview I will have it all down pat and wont even need to glance at it! Its not like I don't know what I am talking about, I do, its just putting it into words when I nervous that is tough. Those specific questions of, what would you do if this and this happens get me and I have to take a deep breath, remember past what I ate for breakfast and hit the points that are important. (ie, the cheat sheet for behavoir management, cooperation with parents, and so on)

Congratulations on the interview, and good luck!!! Good thought on the cheat sheet. I've also found that it helps to be sort of dressed up for phone interviews. I know, it sounds weird, but it helps get me into interview mode. Not sure if that's possible since you'll be out of town, but maybe you can throw a suit jacket into your suitcase or something like that? Maybe I'm just strange...

I have actually heard that before. We will be hopefully going to some plays in NY so I will have at least one nice outfit with me. I might just do that.

Good luck - I've always done better with phone interviews myself.

I was on our hiring committee last year and we did one of our best hires entirely over the phone - for a third grade position! Best of luck.

Before the phone interviews she sent us an overnight package with samples of her previous work and another reference letter. It showed us she was very interested!

My funnest interview was over the phone (wearing jeans and with my feet up on my desk.)

and I just interviewed over the phone for my new PT gig. I find it kind of liberating because when they ask the stupid question you can just roll your eyes AND answer the question.

Good luck!! I had a phone interview when we moved for residency. A tip I received was to stand up while talking on the phone. You'll do great!
