I've noticed a few people around the boards mentioning writing, as in "I'm writing a book" or "I should write a book." I'm a grant & report writer by day, and in my free time I do some creative writing and am plotting out a novel, just for fun. I'm curious about what others are working on -- do you write for work, for fun, or both? Fiction, nonfiction? Blogs, articles, short stories, books? No need to share personal details if you don't want to, I'm just wondering how many other career or hobby writers are out there!

I write non-fiction informative stories for work with most of it being online, but I do plan to write a book. I just have to put pen to paper and outline it. I'm really paranoid about sending my writing through email before it's published, because I've had it stolen before and I suspect it was that way somehow. Writing is only part of my job however.PGY4 Nephrology Fellow

I started a novel several years ago (pre-baby, pre-grad school) because I felt there was a market for dystopic YA books. Well, I was right (Hunger Games & subsequent copycats)...and I missed that train (lol). Now that I've finished grad school, I might jump in again, starting fresh obviously. I still like my characters, but I'll adapt elements to the next project. I have no burning desire to publish or anything, it's more for me.Wife to PGY4 & Mother of 3.

I write a lot of memos for work. Fun stuff like 50-state surveys on pension plans or open records laws (for example). I've written a couple 2-page "issue briefs" and some bill summaries that we publish on our website, but most of my stuff just goes to whoever asked the question.
I've done a little bit of "fun" writing, but not recently, and I think a whole book is kind of terrifying. And actually, I think my memos are fun too, which probably just makes me a weirdo.Last edited by oceanchild; 09-06-2012, 05:38 PM.Julia - legislative process lover and general government nerd, married to a PICU & Medical Ethics attending, raising a toddler son and expecting a baby daughter Oct '16.

Writing is like breathing to me, which is probably why I'm so addicted to the Internet - communicating in writing feels more natural to me than speaking. I mostly write for me and am not interested in getting published. I started a diary/journal when I was about 9 and filled 80+ journals by the time I turned 30. I loved writing papers in college, and would even write extra ones just for the fun of it, and sometimes professors would give me extra credit for it. (Nerd alert!! ) I wrote a couple zines in my 20s, and had a couple articles published in small magazines... For I think 6 years in a row, I participated in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) - you sign up to write a 50,000 word novel (first draft) in the 30 days in November. It's totally insane and so much fun - quality doesn't matter, just quantity, so you're free to write awful stuff if that's what it takes to just get the damn draft out. Some people do it with the intent of then editing their draft novel and submitting it for publication somewhere, but I just do it for me, and usually abandon each novel at the end of the month and start anew the next year.
I'm not sure if I'll ever write a book with the intent to publish it. Maybe. It seems like I "should," since writing is such a huge part of me... but I shudder at the idea of having deadlines and someone editing my work; I know that's really weird of me. I have a strong aversion to things like writing groups, writing classes, readings, etc. I don't want to participate in any of that. I don't write for feedback. I write because I can't not.
