He insisted on applying to like 6 on the West Coast that he politely declined the interviews for after we knew he had enough in our desired areas. Really, though, it's a drop in the bucket in application fees. Better to apply to more and only then to cull based on interview offers than not apply to enough. Might be different for Rads though. For Uro, the whole thing is done in 6 weeks of interviewing because of the early match. Many programs offer interviews the same day as other programs so you have to choose and they expect a fair number of declines, etc.Allison - professor; wife to a urology attending; mom to baby girl E (11/13), baby boy C (2/16), and a spoiled cat; knitter and hoarder of yarn; photographer

Repeat to yourself that it is only three years.
One thing our residency location taught us was that we really are happier in Chicago. Sometimes you have to be in a lousy place to really appreciate how good you had it and will have it.
I had an opportunity in a city I would not normally go to. So wifie interviewed there and we put it on our list.
Well the opportunity didnt materialize.
and unfortunatly we got the city.
I went just about catatonic for two days. I was stunned. People kept asking my wife when I would snap out of it.
I did after two days and really dont remember it.
The city tried to project an image of Mayberry, but bacame more like "Children of the Corn"
Really really really happy in Chicago now.

It's actually 5 years for us! But we really are excited about it now. Honestly, the reason he didn't rank it higher in the first place is because he was worried about my job opportunities and we weren't super excited about living in the city, but it's a really great training program.
I've gotten a few leads on jobs - heard from 4 people so far that all have some potential opportunities, waiting to hear from a couple more, and still have a couple of backups that I may call at some point.Allison - professor; wife to a urology attending; mom to baby girl E (11/13), baby boy C (2/16), and a spoiled cat; knitter and hoarder of yarn; photographer

That sounds positive alotofryarn! My Mom came to stay with us for a visit this past weekend and into early this week. We talked about where we'll match. She said she could see us matching in a strange land I'd never lived before. I had to ask her does she mean in America? She said yes. I hadn't really thought about matching in a place we'd never lived before as a strange land. I remember when I went away to college I was nervous about living in a small town of only 11,000 people that swelled to 21,000 when students were there for the school year. I've got a couple of in-person interviews scheduled for a few weeks from now, when I'll be in town for a conference. Also hoping to do some general networking while there. I've also got a phone call set up for next week. I've sent a couple of e-mails without responses yet, and only one e-mail got a response that was not really promising (although it wasn't an outright no). So, the search continues!Allison - professor; wife to a urology attending; mom to baby girl E (11/13), baby boy C (2/16), and a spoiled cat; knitter and hoarder of yarn; photographer

I'm a little late to the party, so to speak, but I'm just wondering if people begin applying for jobs as soon as match is over or do you wait until after your SO begins residency? I've found a lot of people won't give you a second look unless you're already located in the city but maybe that's changed since the last time I relocated.wife of a PGY-2 anesthesiology resident & mother of one adorable baby girl

I forget what all I've posted about this in her, but I definitely didn't wait until after he started. A lot of this will depend on what kind of job you're looking for, but since I'm a professor, a lot of hiring happens over the summer months, so I had to apply early. I ended up applying before we matched to places he interviewed, and I withdrew applications after we matched. Everybody seemed pretty understanding about the situation, thankfully. I was pretty honest about the fact that I'd go wherever he matched, but I did my best to convince each place that we were ranking them highly because of the great job potentials for me. In the end it didn't matter, because we were a little bit surprised in the match and ended up at a place where I hadn't applied to any jobs, but fortunately I had some connections here and ended up with a really great job. Since I'm an academic and I came mostly fully funded, that helped me out a lot.Allison - professor; wife to a urology attending; mom to baby girl E (11/13), baby boy C (2/16), and a spoiled cat; knitter and hoarder of yarn; photographer

With the job market--- and it hasn't improved much in 3 years-- I started looking as soon as we matched. But that is relative because I couldn't devote too much time because I was working, planning a move and looking for a new place. But I still didn't find work until after residency started and it was only part time.

Thanks for the thoughts, ladies. I will try to apply as I can after the match but with the wedding shortly after and potentially moving - I'm not setting my expectations high.
I'm frustrated to be looking for work now to turn around and potentially be looking again in only 8 months but I certainly can't stop looking now.wife of a PGY-2 anesthesiology resident & mother of one adorable baby girl
