make sure you have input on the match rank list. generally speaking--at least from my experience, most med students put prestige over location. my wife also did the samething. in my opinion, it's a bad idea. residency is long hard road. it's a lot harder than med school-- because the obligation is more--the hours less flexible and stress are more.

I started working on a transfer at work about 2 months before the start of Fellowship. It worked out and there was a opening. They saved it for me all that time until I arrived. Once we got a address I started looking casually. After I transferred and realized it was a hell hole job, I started applying agressivly the second week we were here. I found a new job very quickly. I also work part time.

DrB and I applied to a few programs based on their reputation (2 to be specific) and the rest were the best fits for us in the locations in which we were willing to reside. He's from the west coast but only 3 programs were on our list from out there; the remaining were all in the northeast. He did have a few advisors look at the list to be sure we had a nice mix of stretch goals, probable locations, and less popular locations.

This is great advice though, metroguy! Thanks!
