Also, attendance was taken, then the attendance sheet was passed to be signed, so dual attendance taken. (WTF...)

And you need to ask if you want to leave to use the rest room.

I'm feeling like Hermione raising my hand all the fricking time in pursuit of my participation points. I need to be done. I am turning into the crustiest, crabbiest, curmudgeonly old bitch.
I call BS on that whole thing. Adults don't need a nanny state.

Our grades were participation-heavy in grad school, but by then, we weren't being lectured AT, we were facilitating or presenting every damn day.
No one should have to raise their hand to use the restroom - unless it's during some sort of exam (I can see that).
      Ridiculous.

How badly do you need the grade, vs. the information? Because I'd say F that noise and just extract the education you need in any way you can get it. And use the bathroom without permission at least daily.

This! I might actively walk across the front of the class to use the restroom

I would complain to the dean if I didn't get a satisfactory answer from the teacher. You are not a child - and frankly, they shouldn't be treating their 18 year old students like babies either. Seriously - you are paying good money for this. Switch classes or make a fuss.

I agree with speaking to the dean. You are paying to be taught, not babysat.

I've never experienced anything like that in college. What a joke!

Unfortunately, the class is a requirement, and it's a small university so I have no other options. The professor is otherwise a very delightful lady (and a dawkter's wife!). At some point I'm going to lodge myself in her office and ask what gives. They're not doing the kids any favors with this. It's not university-wide, my bio & chem professors are very happy to help the students who want help, but they will NOT hold your hand. As it should be. *sigh*
