  • Maternity leave

Any plans/thoughts/advice/war stories on negotiating maternity leave. My current employer will allow me 3-6 months of unpaid leave. I'm trying to line up some stop gap measures in my absence, but these conversations always unnerve me.

How many posts have I made today? Can you tell that I don't want to be at work at all today?

3-6 months is awesome! I guess the "unpaid" part might not be so great, though. At the job I had before my first child was born, I was able to take all of my sick time and that was it! Of course, due to the FMLA, I could get the full 12 weeks, but there was no maternity leave built into my job. My sisters (should they ever get pregnant) would each get 12 weeks paid and one would even be able to take 3 years off and still come back to a position at her company!!!
Sorry Kelly, I don't have any advice, but I think it's wonderful that you have some good options (it sounds like anyway).

That is great to have that much flexibility!
When I went on leave, my company offered 3-6 months off. BUT, to keep the same position, you had to come back w/in 3 months. Otherwise, you got a "similar" position and I was a little leary of that.
In terms of handing off work...ugh. I just relied on the kindness of co-workers and farmed out the most necessary work!
