  • PA school

I've decided to start my own self-serving thread about getting into and doing (hopefully) PA school here because you are pretty much my best friends in the world. I completely appreciate and value your input, and I need some advice here and there.

PA school, like medical school, has a central application service. It's called CASPA and it opens on April 16th. EEEEEEK! I have some time to get everything in (Dealines are in September or October typically), but the sooner you get it in, the better your odds. I have some serious work to do in order to get my application in as soon as possible looking as good as possible. For PA's patient care experience is huge, and they also want you to have certifications (it's not necessary, but really good to have). I am looking at getting my BLS certification which can be done in one day (I just need to do it), as well as my Limited Radiography License (have to study a book on my own and take an exam).

The PA application also requires a personal statement. I have not started writing this at all, and I am hoping that someone or a few people here will help me with it. I am willing to post what I write here, and hopefully someone will gently help me edit it and make it as good as it can be. Anyone? Anyone just LOVE writing and want to do it for me? wink. Kidding. Sort of.

After CASPA opens, I will need to contact my references to get them to submit a letter of recomendation for me. Two of the letters need to be from PAs or MDs (Chad's PA is one, and the other is a local FP that I have shadowed a few times), and one letter can be a personal letter. I've already mentioned the personal letter to the iMSNer who I would like to write it for me (PrincessFiona). I hope that's still okay and that the letter would be good??

There are three PA schools to which I am considering applying, but I don't know if I should apply to all three or just one.

Nova Southeastern - This is the school I want to go to. It is in Orlando, and will be the best for my family.

Florida Hospital Adventist University - This one is also in Orlando. It has more required prerequisites that I would have to complete before I could matriculate, and it is VERY religious. I would consider going here if it was my only option, but I really don't want to.

University of South Florida - This one is in Tampa. It is a 75-90 minute commute each way that I would have to do everyday. It's not ideal in the slightest, but could be done in theory.

Thanks for listening and for your continued support!
Heidi, PA-S1 - wife to an orthopaedic surgeon, mom to Ryan, 17, and Alexia, 11.

Excited for you! I'm happy to read over statements too - my main experience is writing my own for grad school and jobs, helping hubby with his, and occasionally reading over them for graduate applicants.

Good luck! My very favorite threads on this board are when the trailing spouse sorts out their own path after everything settles out! I will read/edit if you need it.

Yay! I would throw a wide net and apply to all three programs.

DH said that when reading personal statements they're looking for general indications of normalcy and anything interesting or unique to jump conversations and differentiate applicants.

I'm so excited that you're doing this. It takes a lot of guts to go back to school after starting families. There were a few "older" nursing students when I was in nursing school and truthfully they were the most dedicated and successful. They meant business.

                  When do you find out?

Only slightly related to this thread, but I thought you all might find it interesting since I don't think I've shared it here before - hubby wrote his residency personal statement about competitive pistol shooting. It sparked a lot of conversation during his interviews.

                      These are the directions:

USING YOUR OWN WORDS, in the space provided write a brief statement expressing your motivation or desire to become a physician assistant. You are encouraged to save your work often in the event that you are timed out of the system.

If you are a re-applicant, CASPA STRONGLY ADVISES THAT YOU COMPOSE A NEW PERSONAL STATEMENT.

DO NOT make your essays school specific as you may decide to apply to additional programs at a later date. Once you e-submit your application, you can NOT re-enter, update, or otherwise edit your essay.

CASPA has a character (NOT word) limit of 5,000. This includes spaces, carriage returns, and other formatting. Anything entered in over the character limit will not be saved, and your narrative will be cut off at this point. CASPA advises using Notepad to compose your narrative, as its character count system closely reflects CASPA's, while other word processing programs such as Microsoft Word tend to have a greater discrepancy. If you type your essay directly into CASPA, you can view the remaining character count beneath the text box.

Since the essay section is composed of a text box, formatting such as tabs, italics, or multiple spaces cannot be saved. In order to delineate paragraphs, you should type a double return between paragraphs. This delineation does not show in the “print application” screen, but will separate your paragraphs in the version submitted to schools.

Please note that the “print preview” screen is a preview and does NOT reflect how your narrative will appear to schools.

My guy says a page, double spaced.
It's been a while since grad school though, and we had word counts instead of character counts.
