  • What are the Best and Worst Things About Your Job?

    I'm a SAHM.

Best: funny things my kids say, comfy clothes, going outside whenever I want, cuddles, hanging out with other SAHMs, going to the library and rereading all my favorite childhood books, hosting birthday parties.

Worst: I hate being unable to complete a thought. Lack of privacy. Tantrums. Repeating myself over and over. Bickering kids. Chores. Really gross messes.

I'm a SAHM too and my thoughts are pretty similar to yours Mrs. K so I'll reminisce about my previous career as a civil engineer.

Best: I really enjoyed all the technical details of a project. Determining bid quantities (how many square yards of sidewalk, number of manholes, etc), coming up with the cost opinion, creating the specifications for the project. I enjoyed managing the project budget and trying to keep it on track and keep everything on schedule. I liked making our clients happy by giving them what they asked for when they wanted it. I liked getting to the point where the plans were close to being done and I could go through them and check to make sure they made sense, everything was included, review and markup with my red pen. I really enjoyed it.

Worst: It was always fun to see a project being built, but no matter how good the design was there was always something that would come up during construction. I dreaded getting calls from a contractor or our surveyor saying there was a problem. That usually meant that people were sitting there waiting on a solution and there was a ton of pressure to have an immediate fix. It also sometimes meant that something I had done (even if it wasn't my mistake I still felt responsible because I had reviewed it) may have been wrong. More often that not it was the contractor didn't understand the meaning of the plans or they ran into something we didn't know was underground. Either way I didn't like those unexpected last minute changes.

Although back to the stay at home mom gig I was just saying to DH the other day how nice it is to be at home when we have had all these snow days. If school is canceled it's just like, turn off the alarms, we can sleep in today. Whereas when I was working things like that were much more stressful. I would usually stay home but I would feel terribly guilty about it and worried about what my coworkers thought. That only happened a couple times while I was working but I have no clue what I would have done this year when we've had 10 snow days so far. I am also looking forward to just being home with the new baby, not having to worry about daycare, pumping, etc.

      PA student:

Best: Fulfilling, challenging, acknowledgement by patients/preceptors

Worst: lack of free/family time, stress, being treated like a kid by the program

        Private school teacher

Cons: so many preps. I really miss the homeschool being able to just linger and really delve into topics and spend all day on them. We spent a whole year on ancient history when I homeschooled. We did a 4 year cycle. So having to teach it in about a month without literature, without all of the in-depth analysis felt so rushed and strange. Plus, I feel schizophrenic. I am trying to immerse myself in the French Revolution and also the American Civil War. ( I teach American History and World History.) I'm setting up concerts and places for my high school choir to sing as well. My elementary music kids are studying the orchestra, but I need to get stuff ready so my 4th and 5th graders can order their recorders.

Pros- I love the interaction. I love the stretching myself academically and challenging myself. I like my schedule that has lots of down time for me to prepare or stay home and clean house if I need to. I LOVE my students. I love being able to talk about faith. We just finished watching Amazing Grace about William Wilberforce. I can talk to those students about how our faith propels us to make the world better. Well, true faith does anyway. What injustices do they see that God is calling them to tackle? Would they be willing to give 2 decades of their life to do it, like Wilberforce did? Love the faculty and staff for the most part. My daughter is struggling with one teacher that needs to go IMO. But overall they are outstanding.

I'm a tenure track assistant professor in a health science field.

Best: Flexibility, feeling like I'm making a difference at solving real problems through my research.

Worst: Teaching, publish or perish, trying to get funding, currently being in a department where I don't fit in well.

Best way I can answer this is two jobs I did on Sunday back to back.

1- best response drive of my career across Glasgow to a choking 4wk old, ran up tower block stairs, poor mite was blue, quick slap on back with baby head down/face down and out popped a Skittle his brother had popped in his mouth. Took to hospital then...

2- Heroin dealer on someone elses patch taught lesson with machete. Cheeks split (Glasgow smile https://goo.gl/images/GFcoVm ), ears off nose off. Calmly smoking with smoke coming out of cheeks.

Best: I could give you a list of students.

Worst: I could give you a list of students after a couple of drinks 😜
