  • Makin' my own job?

Ok, so all this talk of finding a lucrative/part-time/work when I want to work/while the kids are still kids, has got me thinking....and mostly it is about starting my own business.
We live in an area where there are opportunities for several businesses. Unfortunately, they are all going to require capital upfront and that is something we are short on. But, I have started the ball rolling. Living in Florida, there is an abundance of retired folks. So, seeing as DW is a Pediatrician, there is also a shortage of home health care items aimed to the child. All the peds docs are always shorthanded with bilirubin blankets, so I have put in a request for a quote from a couple manufacturing companies. Also, there are a couple other items, but the blankets would be the hot item. Whether there is any money in it, I don't know yet, but if I can start my own business, then we can have that as a tax advantage- with it's many write-off/allowances/deductions. If there is no money in just blankets, I might look into care for the retired folks.
I haven't got any idea how this really works, like billing and getting paid, but I am willing to figure it out if it looks promising.

Other ideas, the town we live in has already got nearly 2500 building permits for new homes on record for this year alone(with another 5000+, in the works). It is growing terribly fast. The only Chuck E Cheese in this area just closed(it was 25 miles away from our town), but still there are tons of kids that would love to drag their parents to see the big rat for a party.

There are only two liquor stores in this town, both of which are on the north end of town. We live on the south end, and there is a couple areas where it would go real good- like next to the bowling alley. Anyway, it seems there is always business for a liquor store.

There is also no bicycle shop in this town, and we live next to the largest AFB wilderness reserve in the nation. There are literally hundreds of miles of trails to be ridden, but no bike shops. The closest one is about 25 miles away.

So, I have wonderful ideas but the thought of sinking $$ into them makes my stomach swim. I honestly think that all of them would make money, I am just not sure how much and how fast, as we would most likely not be here in five years to find out. I suppose I could sell.

If you are still reading, thanks, I am just throwing out thoughts and ideas and rambling everywhere. Maybe when I come back and read this again it will hit me....the path I should take to being 'master of my own domain'.

    Matt,

All of those things sound like great ideas. If you did the children's medical supplies, you could also consider renting breast pumps. I know many of the home health care places around here carry them and will actually deliver them to your house. Of course, you might want to consider teaming up with some sort of lactation consultant for that.

Here is another idea. What about those giant inflatables that parents can rent for kids birthday parties. That might be an alternative to the Chuck E. Cheese. Plus, living in Flordia, you should be able to stay busy year round.

As far as the risk taking, I don't have any advice for you. Maybe it would make you feel better to sit down with an accountant or consultant and hash out the practical details to see if they would be feasible.

      Matt,
There really are some tax advantages to owning your own business. I think you've got some great ideas, too.
Along the lines of the inflatable parties -- check out http://www.pumpitupparty.com. We went to a b-day party there a few weeks ago and the kids had a great time.

That's really cool, Matt! Have you looked into small business associations in your area? Often they can point you in the right direction, assist with a business plan, host workshops, etc. Here's a FL directory: http://www.floridasmallbusiness.com/res ... ces.asp#01
