  • Online teaching?

My husband will be taking the MCAT and starting applications this semester. I'm also finishing my master's degree this semester.

Though I was previously a technical writer full-time, I'm now a full-time SAHM. I also babysit a little boy, but I really want to stop that after he's 18 months and it's easier for them to find someone else to do it. His parents are friends of ours, but the personality styles of the little boy and me do not mesh well.

I'm looking for online teaching jobs (junior college level) in English or technical communication. My degree will be in technical communication. If you know of any out there, I'd appreciate a heads-up!

    TIA,
    Carrie

I'm not sure where you are living in TX right now, but you could jumpstart your search at

    http://tccta.org

At least it would help you find info about the various tx junior colleges. It looks like they're having their annual convention next week too.

      Re: Online teaching?

      Carrie,
I currently work for a community college (teaching faculty how to teach online) and have arranged with the virtual campus so that I can teach courses online when we move for residency.

Teaching online is great - although a tremendous amount of work. We have 4 children, so I know that I will need to stay at home.

There are a number of places to look for online teaching positions. The Distance Educator is a great resources.

If you need any help, please feel free to contact me.

        Miranda,

I browsed around a bit on the Distance Educator site. I couldn't figure out where job postings would be. Could you help me out?

Thanks so much for your reply!

              Miranda,

Wow! Thanks for all of the great information. I'm going to have a look through the distance educator too.....I have often considered trying that out. I didn't realize that we had a virtual campus here in MN.

Oh yes! I am in MN - so if there is anything you want to know about online edcuation in MN I would be happy to help you out. The school I am at is known in the midwest for its programs (a Duluth 2-year community college).

I would definitely be interested in finding out more information about teaching online classes. I took two online classes during my graduate studies and found it to be a great learning method for me. I was able to download the notes and listen to the lectures at my convenience. It was a valuable experience and I felt that the classes were as challenging as my on-campus classes.

After reading your post I began searching for opportunities in MN and I discovered that Augsburg is currently accepting applications although all current positions are...filled. I think I'll send in my CV though. It certainly can't hurt. Can you think of any other opportunitis that I could look into?

I have considered two diff. PhD options for myself. Nova Southeastern offers a PhD program in Technology in Education as well as a PhD program in Distance Education Technology. I believe that distance ed will continue to grow in popularity and that as the technology improves it will be in an even higher demand.

Do you train educators in distance learning technology?

Lake Superior College in Duluth has a very large online program. What types of courses are you interested in teaching? We are currently trying to get every degree option online. And those that are not entirely online have many components online. Surg Tech even has components online (the lectures, slides, movies, etc). The rest of the program is in the hospital (where it should be).

I agree! Now that there is a structure to online courses and more research is beoing done about online instruction methods and pedagogy, the courses that are being developed are of extremely high quality. I believe Walden and Capella also have online programs for Distance Ed PhD. I have debating between the programs. However, maybe intern year wouldn't be a good time to start.... LOL!

Do you train educators in distance learning technology?
I do all of the training. Actually, I developed an online course for faculty so that they could gain the insights form being a student. In the online course I teach the methods, curriculum design (for online education), and the technology.

AND - if you ever have a chance, Madison WI has an incredible conference on Distance Teaching and Learning. It is always held around hte 1st week of August. I have gone to it (and presented). It is fabulous.
