  • How long does it take to learn a new language?

    Rachel,

Learning a third language is easier than learning a second language. Spanish should be an easier language to learn because its presence can be found everywhere. Basic Spanish should be fairly easy to master, especially if you commit yourself to a half hour everyday.

By the way, I am jealous that you are taking on such an endeavor!!!! I long to be the eternal college student. Good luck!

Well, Rachel, I would be inclined if I were in your shoes to brush up on my FRENCH...because that is the language that you learned....just in case...and if the question of speaking a foreign language were to come up you might add that you speak/read/write French at whichever level of competency that you have...that you really enjoyed studying it and would embrace the idea of taking courses, even an immersion course in Mexico to develop a similar proficiency in Spanish.

The idiots guide to spanish in a weekend might leave you looking....errrrrr...less desirable because you just can't learn a language in a weekend with enough proficiency to be impressive.

I would also love to learn spanish...maybe we could taken an online class together or something.......

Ok everyone. I've got a question. How long do you think it takes to learn a new language? Here's the situation:

I just got a call for a job interview with one of the largest television stations in the country. What's the catch? Well, it's one of the largest Hispanic television networks in the country. The job is for an advertising gig. Now, the guy I'm meeting with is the Sales Manager and he's really cool b/c I knew him back when I was at my last job. He called me up today and told me he wanted to meet. I didn't want to ask him specifics about the position b/c I didn't want to blow my shot at an interview. The job is for an advertising sales gig and working w/advertising agencies to fill up tv ad space. Now, I know I won't be making the ads - That's usually the job for the advertising agency. But, I'm not really sure how much of an impact knowing the spanish language will play. In high school and college, I took French b/c all of the Spanish classes were full. I've got an "Idiot's Guide to Spanish" here and I'm thinking of going through that over the weekend. (Great! It's also my cousin's wedding this weekend and we are traveling to CA). What do you think? When going through the book, I saw some similarities b/w French and Spanish. I'll give it a whirl...

Thanks for the feedback, Kris and Kelly! Today, I got another job for a sales gig but you have to know Spanish. I don't think I would have liked it b/c it involved going into retail establishments and selling them phone cards. My resume has been out there for awhile and a few recruiters have my info, so I have been getting random calls from people I don't even know! It's crazy! I'll let you know what happens at my interview with the tv network next week. Kris, that would be fun to take Spanish together! Ok, getting back to my job hunt...
