I don't know if you are still lurking about on the board, but I was just curious how the post-match job search was coming. I'm sure that a toddler, a pregnancy, and a medical student keep you busy, but if you get a chance, let me know if you need anything.

    Good luck,

    Kris,

He has four more weeks of this terrible rotation. I wondered why no one has taken action against her also. Perhaps Gregg is the first to stick his neck out and be the possible sufferer of terrible retaliation. I know that she was so bad to a student last year that the poor girl went home crying every night and suffered from stress ulcers. She also went after a nurse in front of a patient to the point where the nurse left the room crying. Apparently her spoken motto is that being a surgery resident is like being a prison warden...it's the only place you can treat people like crap and get away with it. Lovely, don't you think.

I plan on working up to the point of delivery so I can spend more time with the baby. I will probably take eight weeks but plan on taking the baby with me to work after that. I took Chase for the first year. Hopefully, this new one will be as calm and compliant as Chase was. It was so great having him with me that long.

I have thought about every imaginable option to manage working part time or from home. Unfortunately, we really need my income or might end up living in a nice sized box under the bridge. As soon as Gregg is in residency, though, I am going to work part time. The money will be tight but at least he'll be bringing something in. I am counting the days, minutes and seconds.

    Thanks for the supportive thoughts.

      Tiffany,

It truly is amazing what some people get away with!!! I hope that your husband speaking out will not cause any problems for him...this woman sounds like she needs to be on medication

I know what you mean about trying to find some kind of at home work.....I've also been trying to come up with some ideas for us...we're out of training now, but have a lot of debt...I really need to do something to bring in more income...but WHAT!!!

Let us know what comes of your dh's complaint!!!

        Tiffany,

That is horrible. Our chief of Surgery would never tolerate that behavior. I have seen him actually instruct a resident to apologize for his behaviour to a med student and a nurse. He told the resident, in front of the nurse, that she had been around a lot longer than him, and she was his backup when he is asleep in the oncall room, etc, etc. Very refreshing.

          Kelly,

Thanks for the thought. I do need something...lots of money so I can stay home and stay sane. (ha!) Things are amazingly hectic with Gregg doing his rotations and being 7 months pregnant with a 2 year old at home. Such is the life of an abandoned medical spouse. Gregg's current rotation is horrible. He is doing a surgery rotation at the VA here in Iowa and the resident in charge of the students is a piece of work. So far he hasn't learned a thing because all she does is bark orders at him and then berates him is he does any little thing incorrectly. She doesn't give instruction as to what she wants or explanation as to what was wrong. Her reputation precedes her, frankly, and Gregg was warned about her when he started there. We are just counting the moments until he is done with her. Its really too bad that there are people like that out there who can actually call themselves doctors. It taints the profession. I am counting the moments for my maternity leave and my really silly thought that I will have more time then to focus on my family and my life. Let me know how things are with you.

            Tiffany,

That is terrible. It really makes you wonder...if he had been warned about her, obviously people KNOW that she is a problem. Why hasn't anyone taken any kind of disciplinary action with her? What a stressful thing for your hubby and for you!!!

When do you go on maternity leave? How much time will you be able to take? Are you able to consider any work from home options or part-time options once the baby is born? I imagine that things are really tight with hubby still in med school, so I doubt that is an option for you...but thought I'd check and see.....

I hope this rotation is over soon!!!!!!!!

              Tiffany,

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that you and Greg are having a rough time of it. In some ways, surgery is viewed as the last bastion of hard core, old school medical training. Believe me, you really don't want to hear my opinions on this topic! Greg isn't going to go into surgery by any chance?

Anyway, the reason that I was thinking about you and the match is to see if I could help you out at all. I know an EEOC and a HUD employment law attorney in DC. In addition, there is a legal research company here in the Twin Cities that hires attorneys to do freelance projects for firms who need some outside resources to help pitch in. Essentially, if a firm gets to busy, they hire this company to provide the research and writing on a specific issue. The attorneys start at $20 an hour and can work from home. I do not work there, but a girlfriend of mine supplements her meager judicial clerkship salary with this job. Just a thought.

Does your firm even offer part time or telecommuting? I've heard that in some instances, part time in the legal field can be almost as demanding as full time except that you get half the pay.

Needless to say, your circumstances hit home and I just wanted to see how you were doing.

                Kelly,

I would love to hear more about that company that hires out extra help when firms get too busy. What a great way to supplement income or work from home at a later date. I suppose I shouldn't complain too much about my job. I have very flexible hours and my employer is beyond family friendly. I took my son with me to work for the first year and plan to do the same with the new baby. It's hard to find jobs like that out in the legal field. We have one attorney here who works part time but realistically she is a paralegal with very limited duties. I'm not sure I could actually get away with that at this point in my employment. I think you are right...I would end up working full time for half the pay. I suffer as it is in the pay area for the option of being able to be a little more of a mommy, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's hard, though, when my son tells me this morning that he doesn't want to go to school (which is how I refer to day care because I can't stand the thought of putting him in day care) he wants to stay home. It makes my heart break. Thanks for the options...keep them coming!

                  Tiffany,

Sorry for posting to my post, but what about working for "The Man"? You really can't beat Government hours and benefits. The pay decrease is completely worth those benefits.

I have also heard of people networking into the local bar by joining the JAG reservists in the area. Plus, the added income is a bonus. Your one weekend a month commitment may be a problem if hubby will have to work a ton of weekends during his residency, however. I'm still thinking....

I don't think that this company is hiring right now because of the downturn of the economy, but for future reference...

I only know about this company through a friend who works there, so unfortunately I have little inside information for you. I do know that they do occasionally hire attorneys outside of the Twin Cities area. Maybe you could just give this person a call and tell her that you had heard about the company and were wondering if they had an employment opportunities on the horizon. I know that employment law is a hotbed of litigation right now, so you definitely have a marketable skill.

Do you have a feel for where you may end up? Perhaps your lawschool could give you alumni names of people working in that region. My hubby asked his residency program director to call the law school to allow me to use their career services office. (He happens to be training at a university with a law school attached.)

                    I'm still thinking....
