So, I'm in a new city, don't know anyone, no contacts, and I'm looking for a job.
What are the steps involved in finding a new job in a brand new city? I did this once before, in our last city, but was highly unsuccessful at doing so. I wanted to see what others have done.
Here's what I've done so far (i.e. I'm trying to be proactive but so far nothing has worked)
1. identify fields of interest
2. obtain informational interviews in field of interest
3. network with alums and do more informational interviews
4. do professional-level volunteering in fields of interest
5. continue to apply to jobs via craigslist, etc. and online web sites
Am I missing anything here? I've been doing this stuff for a few weeks and nothing is materializing, I know it takes time.
But the main field I'm looking in has very few jobs and is also very competitive, I'm not sure if I should cross it off my list altogether, the problem is that besides this field, everything else doesn't really interest me.
What do you do while you're job searching and informational interviewing--in terms of a temp or short-term job? My professional level volunteering will take up a day or two per week, should I get some random secretary temp job to make some money, though it will do nothing for my resume, or do more volunteering, which might add to the resume but I won't be getting a paycheck?
