  • YIKES!

    Hi everyone,
I haven't been around much these past couple of weeks...
It all ends tomorrow... I've got the oral portion of my qualifying exam and I will either be (or not be) ABD. It starts at 3:30pm and the grilling will probably last a good 2 hours.

I'm freaked out. There have been some bumps in the road this past week (I had to replace one of my committee members for health reasons). All my nervous habits have surfaced and last night I didn't sleep very well.

I'll let you know how it goes. Either way, I'll enjoy not having this looming over my head.

      Deep breaths, babe.

I remember doing the oral defense (s) for my thesis. Is it just a committee or are you presenting something publicly as well? For me, a sense of calm usually arrives just in time. Probably shock, actually. Either way, you get through. Take your time answering questions and remember that they don't expect you to know EVERYTHING - just most everything.

Lots of luck and best wishes.

        Thank you for your support!!!

It's *just* a committee. 5 professors. 4 from my dept. and one from a different dept. It's open to the public when I defend the dissertation (don't even think about loading up the bus and coming!)

woohoo! you'll do great - your advisor wouldn't let you do it if (s)he didn't think you were prepared.
One word of advice - go to the bathroom right before it begins.

(I had a fire drill happen in the middle of my qualifier, and the professors decided to ignore it, since no students would see us)

Oh my gosh, Fluff. That's exactly what my advisor said today! "There would be no exam if you weren't ready."

Good advice about the bathroom thing.
I've got the weakest stomach. It might be TMI, but I let nervousness get to my stomach and it does a number on me...and the toilet...
