  • Other jobs to stay at home

Does anyone have any other suggestions on other jobs to do while staying at home with my own kids? I would of course much rather stay at home with my own kids but we are going to need more than just my DH's salary through residency. I want more than anything to stay home. Any stay at home money making idea's? Or things any of you have done or heard of? Thanks! I know it's all premature but i want to be prepared once we get there and I am excited to start a family!

You know- pet-sitting is a huge $ maker. I used a company called "Sit-A-Pet" in DC and paid them 20 bucks a day to dump crunchy food in to the cat dishes. Not as easy to do w/ kids but definitely something to consider pre-kids.

and Dog-Walkers? Holy Crap- we have friends who pay a dog sitter to walk their dogs at lunch and theose people are making so much money and have so much demand that they have had to hire more people.

My mom's pet-sitter advertised on Craig's List and had 200 calls the first weekend. No lie.

They actually should be bonded and insured- but there's no end to the $. I couldn't find anyone to inject the diabetic cat so she had to travel with us to my parents house. The vet wanted to charge 8 bucks a shot plus boarding fees. (that would have been over 50 bucks a day. No thanks. There are days when I think- "I know I'm not the only one with a petthat requires special medical services." Imagine the money- under cut the vets and there you go!)

Do you have, or could you gain, accounting skills? Preparing taxes and book-keeping are great work-at-home jobs. Oftentimes people start out working FT in an office and then build up their own client base and switch to home.

On the pet front, one of our neighbors charges $35 per night for boarding dogs in a free-range, family environment. You have to be willing to have a bunch of dogs in your house, but she frequently has 5-10 dogs and walks then three times per day with her own dog that she would need to walk anyway. To do pet care, I don't think you need certification but you often need insurance (bonding).

Just FYI, I'm almost finished a bookkeeping diploma through http://www.pennfoster.edu. It'll take me about 5 months by the time I finish it, studying part-time. I know of people who work from home.

I would love to hear ideas for working at home too. Anyone handle a resale business or anything?

I've been selling lingerie (mostly bras) on ebay for a little under a month. It's really not bad at all once you get going but I've had to slow down right now because I need to reorganize all that inventory into a more manageable system. It's a numbers' game because the profit margin is so slim that I have to make up for it in volume. I hear that children's clothing (even lightly used) does well on ebay but I know nothing about it so I didn't venture in that area.

You can also become a travel agent from home, I think that would be very interesting, not to mention the discounted travel as an extra perk. The travel agent we used to book our Jamaica wedding works from her home. :chat:
