Why don't we get a full month's salary as a holiday bonus like they do in Germany?

I haven't checked our Amex balance for the past month (Christmas, Seattle, lift ticket for me at Whistler, dinner, etc. etc.) because I'm afraid to look.

We're going to eat the entire contents of our fridge until we go shopping or eat out.

It is a bit scary, I just looked at that online and I know a few of the expenses from the last two days are not in yet (although I think the balance is accurate). I had funds available and quickly made a payment just to make me feel (somewhat) better.

I'm sick of stores and going out for dinner. We were supposed to eat out (again!) with a friend of my partner tonight but I asked him if I could cook dinner instead in our small home. We have lots of good wine (great gifts!) and it's going to be just as nice, and WAY less expensive.

Phew.

An update: it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Dh was afraid he was going to come home to an empty house - that I would sell everything while he was away at work!
