  • Credit Report/Collection Agency Question

I don't know if anyone on here has any info that might help me out here.

I paid a cable bill late last year after we canceled our cable account. Actually what happened was that we moved to England, canceled our cable, and I didn't know we still owed the cable company anything. I wasn't getting our mail in the UK and thus the account went to collections. When we returned to the US, I went through our old mail, called the cable company immediately, and paid over the phone the full balance. Little did we know it was sent to a collection agency.

Fast forward 5 months. We checked DH's credit this week and BAM there it is, collection agency. Some cr bureaus say it's paid some say it isn't. I talked to the collection agency and the cable company today. They both told me that "this collection agency" doesn't remove accounts from credit reports- ever. I was told to wait 7-10 years and then it will fall off. And that our credit rating will improve since they'll report it paid in full... even tho I never paid them a dime. I paid Comcast directly.

Is there some law out there protecting consumers against negative actions listed on the credit report when accounts have been paid in full? Am I really stuck for 7-10 years over a bill I paid in full?

Check out the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Here's a link on disputing an entry on your credit report. http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consume ... cre21.shtm

You may also consider calling the Federal Trade Commission: http://www.ftc.gov/ftc/contact.shtm

        Re: Credit Report/Collection Agency Question

To improve your credit score, I think what MrsK said is probably the only way - file an official dispute to get it corrected.

If you're working on a specific loan, like a mortgage, you can have Comcast send a letter directly to the lender to let them know that it was paid. I think there may be a way to attach a letter to each of your credit reports. It still won't change your score, but anyone doing a thorough review of your credit report would see that.
