  • Renters insurance in Florida

We just signed a lease for a place in Florida (6 weeks only) and the landlady requires us to purchase renters insurance. My current auto insurance guy cannot write a policy in Florida and his assistant simply did a zip code search for an agent. I can do that, too.

I was wondering if any of you had a recommendation for a good agent. I'm currently with State Farm, but I'm willing to go with another company. I'm not super concerned with the lowest rate since it's for such a short period of time anyway, but I do want someone good and willing to work with me on some specific terms the landlady mentioned. More specifically, the part where she asks to be named as loss payee. That's not something I came across while obtaining online quotes.

Tenant shall obtain and carry during the entire lease term, insurance covering personal property, furnishings and public liability for the maximum amounts of coverage reasonably obtainable. Upon request, Tenant shall provide Landlord with proof of this coverage naming Landlord as loss payee.

Well, scratch that. She just emailed us back saying that we shouldn't bother for such a short stay, unless we're bringing something insanely expensive. I tend to agree, especially considering the hassle of obtaining it and then canceling shortly thereafter. Thanks anyway. Feel free to delete the thread.

I tried to reply to this earlier but got interrupted. If you decide to get the insurance --- never a bad idea in FL to have renters and hurricane insurance -- I'd recommend you call Jane Thackery at State Farm. There are not a lot of State Farm agents in FL because they don't insure property there, just autos, so State Farm is not very popular there any more. I know, this sounds nuts, but Jane sells insurance from other companies to cover property in FL. I've always been happy with the service I've received from her office. PM me if you need her number. I keep it on speed dial.
