How much do you typically pay your tax preparer? I have always done ours until now. This year we have some weird stuff that merits a professional review. I'm getting quotes and experiencing some sticker shock.

    What is a typical fee?

Last year we paid $425. That was to do federal and two states.

      Re: taxes

We used an accountant a few years ago when DH and I got married and I had a business.

Altogether I think it was $500-$600. He was a CPA/JD in NYC, and his fee was less than 10% of our refund, so I was happy.
But, you can probably find cheaper.

We just met with our accountant today. Dh, through his business, pays his accountant over $2,000. I don't remember the exact figure. Dh's situation is probably different than yours though. His accountant does more than prepare his taxes. She also provides advice and review for this business on a quarterly basis as well as the LLC of the buidling Dh and his partners own.

We talked with his accountant for over an hour today and all I could think about was: ka-ching, ka-ching we're racking up a bill here.

Wow, our is a deal. We pay $265 for state/federal plus he has to deal with family partnership stuff so it's not a straight forward return. Maybe this is just the going rate in AZ.

Ours is a deal, too! We have a family-friend who is a CFO who actually lives in another state. He does DH's whole family's taxes. We have mail everything, but it is worth it. Our taxes are pretty straight forward with lots of interest write-offs from all our student loans.

$435 last year. The year before I think it was $400. I need to ask how charges are calculated or if it is a flat fee. The year before I was a consultant and had tons of expenses, receipts, etc. Last year, I only had W2s. I would have thought that last year would have taken less time.

Wow, I think we're getting a great deal. It's $160 w/straight W-2s and $190 if there are any 1099s. But we have pretty straightforward returns (i.e. no business or investments).

Ugh, we pay our accountant a boatload because our taxes are uber-complicated. With my LLC and DH's practice, we have a lot of write-offs and deductions. We also own multiple properties and have various investments. Oh, and not to mention all of the 1099's from my student loans. It takes our CPA 2 weeks minimum to do our taxes; last year it cost us $1200. Worth every penny, though!

We just got our taxes back, and along with the packet, a big fat bill for $1350. Ouch.

$39.99 for TurboTax--the fancier package--we have a few odd things, here and there, so I need more than the basic. We have fed and one state.

I've been doing our taxes ever since our second year of marriage...when I discovered that my husband is a money idiot and I fired him.

I don't know what will happen after fellowship--I'll continuing doing them unless his business situation gets too complicated.

Next year should be FUN for me...he'll have 5-1/2 months' worth of foreign-earned income and we converted my rollover IRA to a Roth IRA (first year we could do this--but I'll owe for that). **sigh**

I do ours on Turbo Tax too - and we got our refunds this week - yay! First time we haven't owed the state of MN, ridiculous!

We'll probably have ours done starting with 2012 since we'll have both training and post training that year.

We've been using Turbo Tax for the past few years, and I really like it. Simple and intuitive.

Turbo Tax as well - this year was depressing - it cost us more to buy turbo tax than we are getting back
