can you not wait for that income tax check to arrive?!?!? It's so tight around here being a SAHM and living on this PGY1 salary! Top plans for the money:

    1. pay off those (2) nasty credit cards that have plagued us since we moved out here.
    3. Buy ceiling fans for this house
    4. Paint living room and kitchen (it's pinkish white, WTH were they thinking!?!?)

anyone else getting back a decent check this year?

Pinkish white? Maybe they thought it was a "warm" shade of white, lol.

I got back $1700, but I don't work, so it plus my student loan refund check are what I will be living off until the next student loan refund check comes in October. What I do with next year's refund will be more exciting - it will go towards job hunt expenses - new suits, professional conferences, etc!

But I did do some shopping for myself with this year's refund. I obviously didn't use all of it, but I did drop a couple hundred.

I hope Uncle Sam sends your check really soon!

I seem to recall we had our withholding set pretty well during residency, so we didn't get much of our money back but didn't have to pay either.

This year we're cutting a five digit check to the feds. Whoo! :P

We got a sizeable check - we haven't really spent any of it though.

We paid a crazy amount of taxes this year and were handed a 20,000$ tax bill that has caused a lot of lost sleep. We only claimed 1 dependent and thanx to the amt couldn't deduct much of anything. It turned me into a republican faster than you could say WTF. :/

Typically our federal return pays the taxes we owe to the state. At least we usually break even.

                  What's amt?

That's the subject of big debate over here -- we know we're getting back more than I've personally ever seen, but what to DO with it? Savings, pay off some CC debt (thanks, residency), do something fun with it... etc.
We're making a list of possible choices that work for us, then speaking regarding pros and cons.
If it was totally up to me, I'd forfeit any kind of "fun" money and swiftly pay off two CCs with it.
Ah, the joys of marriage and communication.

Re: Is it just me or....

When we had that blizzard in February, I took off a day of work and filed our taxes then. We got a healthy chunk back from both fed and NY. Credit card debt is now wiped out and our savings is at a comfortable place for our upcoming move and month without income.

Kris - I remember when I worked at [bank] my boss handed me her $30k tax check to mail. Crazy!

We're getting a sizeable check, but we'll probably have to bring it to the closing of our house (that is, if we ever find a buyer)

Finally got our paperwork in to the company that'll put it all together for us a week or two ago. Expect to hear back within another week or two, so right now, don't know if we'll owe or be owed. If we get money back, it'll go toward the "deplete our savings a little less while I'm unemployed" fund.
