I am in the camp of it's been a while since we have received a refund from the Feds. I would rather owe "a small amount" than have a huge check come my way, because I don't like loaning money to the govt. and I can invest the extra we get in our monthly paycheck better than they can.
We owe a lot less than we did last year (~$6000) [thank you new energy efficient backdoor we installed tax credit], and would owe considerably less if my in-laws didn't have us in an LLC. We would owe about $1000 if that were the case. We live in a state where we have state income tax, and surprisingly we will be get a small refund back.
I agree, Kris, I would look into a different accountant. Is Thomas on a 1099 or W-4? Dh has his taxes taken out and is on a W-4, and even then our accountant is always making sure that we don't have to do quarterly payments, and does a year out projection (if everything were to stay the same, go up or down) and where we would be at the next year. He stays really on top of any upcoming changes, and let's us know how it will affect us. I know that on a 1099 you have to "set aside" your taxes yourself. Because we are pretty sure we are going to owe something each year, we set aside some money into a depositable CD at our bank.Gas, and 4 kids

I think if states were having trouble with refunds there would be big, fat stories all over the airwaves. Keeping the money from the people is a huge deal. I know that KS *did* have trouble last year until some bill was signed, but again, it was discussed to death until it was resolved.

I haven't heard of any states having problems with writing refund checks for their residents. I got my state refund pretty quickly, but it was pretty small since I only lived and worked there through the end of May. However, I wouldn't have been surprised if my previous state had problems. This is the state where the governor wants to fire all the teachers and the teachers are all ready to tar and feather him. Right now, I like my small, quiet state much better.Event coordinator, wife and therapist to a peds attending

I'm still waiting for my check from New York State, but it looks like we won't be getting it until April 1st at the earliest since the state "stopped paying the refunds on Monday." Lame.
