I hadn't thought of this...can you even get it as a med student? I have a policy through work that covers me--enough to pay off all of our expected med school loans or cover living expenses for awhile. But if he died...that would be a lot of loans for me to cover without a higher salary to cover them later. Yikes.

Like Cheri said, he will be able to get it. Dh got a 1 million dollar policy when we had our first baby and he was in grad school at the time.

If they are federal loans and not private, they should die with him, unless you put your name on them.

Good info--they are all federal. I believe they are all in his name, but I'm not 100% sure.

Unless you had responsibility for him, then chances are they're all on him.

Yep, rule #1 a financial advisor told us was to never put our names on each other's loans because they die with them.

The only loan we share is the mortgage. Car loans, and most everything else are an either/or set-up. Even the credit cards are all in my name and get a card for him.
