I would rent. I would want the maximum amount of flexibility to move after residency. The job market can be so fickle. You don't need to add trying to sell a house to your list of worries.

Reconsidering our decision to rent

We rented during all throughout residency and a good thing as we would have been upside down about half of the value. We are soon to be starting year 3 of renting during attendinghood. Wanted to pay off our private school loans (check), buy a new car for me (check) and pile up 20% for our "forever" home. This next year will get us there and also will take us to partnership buy-in and job security. We are pretty conservative, but we wouldn't buy a home unless we planned on staying in it for at least 7 years. Sure you might pay a little more renting, but the flexibility and worry-free living is worth it IMO. Good luck doing what is best for you and your family.Husband of an amazing female physician!

Update: A rental house with a pool in our ideal location popped up on the market just a couple days after we left town. It was $250 cheaper than the one we were considering, in the #1 school district, and cuts DH's commute in half. Pollyanna (Tara) and her DH were nice enough to go tour it for us and gave it the thumbs up. We jumped on it because we know how tight the rental market is. There were a total of 4 applications including ours on the place, but luckily we got it!!!
Seriously, Tara was a lifesaver! Reason #7463193 why I **heart** IMSN!Charlene~Married to an attending Ophtho Mudphud and Mom to 2 daughters
