I'm glad it is working out like that for you.

We have enjoyed our post-training life. After years of frugal living (med school, residency, fellowship) we decided to enjoy our lives in the moment and save for the future. We contribute a substantial amount to our retirement accounts each month before our paycheck hits our account and have done so for 11 years even though we have 5 children. My husband and I will retire later, but will enjoy a similar financial security to you. If there is one thing I know, it is that life can be short and you have to be enjoy life each day. I'd rather splurge a little here and there ... no one is promising that I'll be alive 15 years from now ...

Hm. Okay. You just joined the site, so it might be a bit presumptive to assume that most of us live beyond our means. I think if you stick around and get to know us, you will quickly find out that the opposite is true. We're all a pretty level-headed bunch, and most of us spouses do a damn good job managing the family finances. So, with that said, you're obviously in good company here. Welcome.

No problem at all! My DH has been a surgeon attending for 20 years, and there are many others on here who have been attendings for a long time as well. You will find a wide range of people in different stages of training and practice on this site, which is one of the best things about it. We each bring our own unique experiences. I am glad what you guys have done is working well for you. I can say the same for us as well. Like I said, you are in good company here.

My financial advice is from Oprah, always sign your own checks!!!!!!! We are in private practice and for years it was just my DH and the office manager/nurse. I left the hospital and joined the practice in 2007. Last March we discovered years of "alleged" embezzelment.
