Is the price on http://www.zillow.com accurate for your house? I've heard it varies in it's accuracy depending on the area, so I was just curious if accuracy was generally the exception or the rule for them.

As a side note, according to zillow, all those vinyl-sided row houses in my snow pictures are like $640-$675. Whoa. And that's on the wrong side of the tracks! (Or the expressway, in this case.)

It's about right for my house in Cleveland (although 10K higher than what we're currently asking for it - just to entice any buyers). My house in Kansas isn't on there ... it's 3 years old??

It was a little higher than I would have expected for our house here pre-remodel. But my expectation is based in part on the sale of a house down the street that I thought was bigger than ours. According to this site, it is a little smaller.

I think it is about right for our house in Denver. It's gone up $35K in few months shy of two years. Seems like a lot but according to this the Portland house has gone up even more. Yipes!

So I would say that the prices for those areas are reasonably accurate, give or take.

Edit to add -- I looked at both my parents houses. My dad's seems high, in part due to his lackadasical attitude about home upkeep. It's not bad but I don't think it is in line with other houses in the area. My mom's seems about right or a little high.

It's about right for my house, (the square ft. is way off, unless they are including garage?), but WAY, WAY, WAY off for my parents house. Their house is probably worth a little over 300K, and the site has it as 2.65 Million. UMMMM, NOOO.

I wouldn't put much stock in the numbers. Seem a bit fishy to me. According to the site though, we have the most expensive home anywhere in our neighborhood. LOL I guess we might. We have a good yard and 4 beds. Most of the others are 3.

            Wouldn't that be nice.
Maybe the site knows something no one else does!

It puts mine at 539K...wishful thinking, I guess. We'd probably be hard pressed to get 425. 400 would make me quite happy.

Our house and all of the houses in our neigbhorhood were in the 50-75K range. Interesting that one sold for several times that recently. Guess they overpaid hee hee. It was spot on for my sisters house and a bit low for my parents- it had it about 500 SF smaller than it is.

I just checked my sister's house in Houston that they JUST bought and it valued it a little higher than they paid but not by much. My BIL's condo in San Diego also valued a little higher than what he paid for it last year. My IL's just bought a new house but its not showing up.

They only have four counties in Indiana and mine isn't one of them!

The site doesn't support the Apple Safari browser so I'll just tell you that ours is listed at 489k and that's about average for this neighborhood.

They are about $40- $80K below what houses in our new neighborhood are going for.

They had our last house at half of what we sold it for.

I just read an article about this in the Wall Street Journal. It is still in beta-testing and doesn't have all the "bells and whistles" that it will have...should it maintain existing.
Basically, it has a load of public records from years past, then it takes the latest sale date if there is one and crunches all the numbers. It has our area, because there is always home turnover due to the transfer in and out of military families. The value of our home is "probably" what we could sell it for....the square footage is incorrect, if you play with the site by trying to adjust things, like the square footage, adding a pool, changing the room numbers....typically, the site crashes.

It is a neat site, but I wouldn't put much stock in the numbers it spits out.

man, I'm addicted to zillow now.
I just zillowed the neighbourhood of a kid I'm supposed to tutor to see if I should feel guilty about charging them my regular rate. Their house is estimated at 2.1 million.
                              I guess no guilt.
