  • Loan repayment

Hi all, I'm new here. I'm wondering when loan repayment starts - after graduation? Are forebearances an option during residency?

It really depends on the type of the loan you have. Stafford have 6 months, Perkins - 9 and some private ones not until after residency or immediately. Only subsidized loans can be consolidated under a lower rate.

I think DH consolidated his unsubsidized Direct Loans (now in forebearance during residency).

Thanks so much for the replies! As the person who holds the household together while DH attends school, I can see I'll be working as hard (or harder? lol) getting up to speed on all of this.

Loans are a big pain. My DW and I both have over $100k in loans apiece and coordinating them has been a major pain.
