  • How Long?

I think we have talked about this before, but I can't find it. How long do you keep paper around? power bills, phone bills, insurance papers, etc, etc? I am drowning in paper between being afraid to throw things away and school papers. DH thinks he has to keep everything forever. Fortunately he is never here and I clear his stuff (Journals, etc) on trash day.[/b]

I think it's 3-5 years for tax related expenses and paperwork (in case of audit), but it may be longer. Other than that, most bills can be shredded. Credit card statements may be handy for personal accounting, but you can always get a year end statement from the cc company to keep instead. I keep my monthly financial papers for one year in a file folder organizer. When I get around to - say Jan 2007 - I throw out the Jan 2006 stuff and replace it. We all keep WAY MORE than we need. (And then we can't find the stuff we DO need!)

Just read an article about this, IRS suggests keeping tax info for seven years. Everything else, bills and such, can be kept for a year, then shredded.

I keep the IRS stuff for the requisite seven but since all of my bills are paid online, I let the bank keep the records. Utilities are kept until the next months bill comes.

I keep my current insurance policies (USAA does them every six months) online and all of my bank statements are also archived with USAA.

Tax stuff is 7 years, otherwise, you only have to hold on to papers for as long as you want to. I save other papers for about a year and then shred them.

If you ar emilitary, hang on to anything military related as long as you will be receiving money from them. that might mean forever, fyi.

I was told by the first set of personnel that did our first move to hang on to all moving paperwork just in case we're over or under paid. which, as anyone who has ever had to deal with the civilians who don't give a shit in personnel can attest, it's a VERY good plan.

We have all of Rick's orders. period. from the original enlistment orders to the first Iraq war to this past Saturday's promotion.
