  • Insurance costs you pay in residency

My DH is a MS4 and we are eagerly anticpating getting school over and to work on the residency hump. It's hard to look at these possible programs knowing the insurance paid for the family really varies. Some do, many don't pay for the family. We shell out about $6000 a year for the medical insurance available throught DH's school. Which is better than going cobra but a heck of a lot of money. It seems that the average residency starts at $40,000ish, but if we have to pay that much in insurance that means we're living on $34,000 minus taxes. Sigh... anyway anyone willing to disclose what you pay for insurance in residency?

Family PPO coverage is $706/month less benefit credit of $630 for about $77 dollars per month. This just changed. It was around $150 or so per month before. Family dental coverage is $120/month (and not worth it for the coverage, IMO).

Ours is free. It pays 80% in network for big things. $2500 out of pocket maximum. 100% for doctor visits with $20 copay. Prescription coverage is okay.

Dental coverage is $17/ month, but still not worth it. Vision, I am not sure because DH and I have both had Lasik/PRK, but it is extra.

$187 per month HMO. No deductible, $15 copay PCP or specialist visit. $250 per day copay for hopsitalization all inclusive.

$10 max generic or $20 max name brand prescriptions. No limit.

Dental $70 per month. Not sure on the deductibles or anything.

However, DH gets reimbursed for all copays or anything out of pocket. They also get a kickback once a year for the premiums. Kinda like free health care....at least that is the way DH see it.

Ours is $75/month for both of us and that would include children when they get here. For in network (Mayo) they cover most everything but if we were to go out of network I think they only pay like 50 or 60%.

ETA: This is only health insurnace, we get $1,000/year in an account for dental/vision which acts as a reimbursement account.

Free. Free prescriptions, no copays, nothing. For all of us. However, you MUST be seen only at the University Hospital or one of it's clinics and seen by the residents. And with my experiences with the peds clinic, I feel like I am getting what we pay for

I am a little bitter also because I had my last child at home, with a midwife, and it was largely covered by insurance. Now if I have a homebirth with this child, I have to pay everything out of pocket. Bleh.

I don't remember the $ amount, but it was somewhere around $150 a month for our family, I think. I've never heard of a residency program that excludes coverage for a family! I hope they are few and far between.

Ours used to be free (no premium) -- at the last program. :thud: That was nice.

JulieL -- when DH was interviewing, I was able to find this information on quite a few programs' GME websites.

Medical was free, and dental was $40/month. Vision was an extra plan, $12/month I think -- really worth it if someone wears glasses or contacts.

I don't remember what we had during the prelim year but it really wasn't much and we lots of options. Right now everything is free as long as we stick to the hospital services/attendings/pharm. Dental is pretty cheap, something around $5 a month for both of us. We don't have any vision plan though (exams are covered but glasses/contacts aren'ts), so I pay for that through my Flex spending.

Do you work? What about getting family coverage through your employer?

Thanks for the replies! We have two children so it's a big deal, the insurance benifits are. DH has found that many residencies will say, insurance is available, but not saying who pays. In the town I live in, it varies in who pays. I work from home for my father right now very very pt, in residency I won't be working at all, to hard to arrange. I sure hope we get in programs like yours!
