  • Dependent care goof

I upped our dependent care flex spending account after the baby was born. I thought the new deduction would start with DHs July paycheck, but it started with his June paycheck AND they deducted a larger amount by mistake.

He called and got the monthly amount they take out reduced, but bc they started it a month early, we will have more in that account at the end of the year than we will have in child care expenses.

There is no way I am going to let that money go back to the government. Any ideas on how I can get it out without being grossly illegal?

from what I understand (maybe I'm wrong), it can be spent on anything medical. i know people who have stocked up on band aids, contact solution, etc. at the end of the year.

I'm not sure if this is an option so definitely check, but could you prepay for January in December? Is it the month you incur the expense or receive the care?

Jesher- it is just a dependent care account, verus a medical flex spending account. So it is only to be used for child care.

Nellie- that is a great idea. Thank you.

oops. sorry! would your daycare provider let you prepay them (or is that what Nellie suggested?) I'm no good at this ... I should stay out of the financial survial forum (except as the example of what NOT to do).
