I'm horrible about this from like the 15th of each month on, because my landlord never cashes my rent check until the 20th or so, so I'm always afraid something nutty will happen and it won't clear because I wasn't paying attention.

I did...until my bank changed their online security and I forgot my new username. It's so secure that I can't have it remind me and I have to call. I probably should do that. I remember fairly well what the balance is.

I used to check MIL's daily to make sure that SIL was siphoning at her usual rate and didn't change things up. Now that she is here, I check less often, maybe every few days. Good thing, her mail order pharmacy (new pharmacy) couldn't get her insurance to go through so "just" charged over $1000 of medications -- didn't bother to call or anything. It should have been $150 w/ insurance. It took them over a week to correct it.

I check ours at least every other day - but not every day.

Every morning before work to see which bill I forgot to mentally include in the budget. Thank God for automatic bounce protection.

I do it too! I went back to using Quicken so I have a fairly good idea of what transactions will happen when but I still like to see it with my own two eyes.

What's that and where do I find some? (says the girl whose rent check bounced by $1 the day before the paycheck came through...)

Ours will allow you to either use your savings account or credit card as bounce protection for no charge. Love it! (USAA, FYI- it's a military-based bank but kids of people in the military are eligible if that helps)

I check maybe two times a week, but I also have alerts set up to email me when there's an overdraft or I'm under a certain balance I've designated. DH and I charge everything to our credit cards, so I think it gives us more peace of mind with our checking accounts. I do end up checking my credit card balance online more often as a result, however.

I check it once a day and check off everything that has gone through and record debits as we use or debit card a lot for everything. This is the way I balance our checkbook and have done it like this for many, many years. I love it but I know what you mean about being obsessive.

OMG, you have NO idea. I have to check our account online or telephonically because I kite checks all the time hoping that they don't hit the bank until payday. I have overdraft protection and an attached savings account, but still, I'm OCD about this. I keep the checking account as lean as possible so that we feel like we don't have any free money to spend.

Should I start a thread entitled "What are your issues with money".

Oooh --- I don't check it often enough. I guess I like living on the edge. Basically I like to avoid bad news, so if I think there might be bad news, I don't check. (Not a great plan, I realize).

I just had to sweet talk / argue / beg the bank to refund me at least some of our overdraft fees from last week. A combination of bad timing and a higher draft from our financial advisor than I expected (which he admitted was his error) caused us to go in the red 1 day before dh got paid (to the tune of $270 in fees). Because I expected the $ to be there, I was using my debit card all over town (I never carry cash). $3.35 at Wendy's, $20.77 at Target ... tiny stuff like that! I'll be dammed if my combo #1 is going to turn into a $33 burger! The bank wanted us to sign up for a line of credit to cover our checking account - but I refused. I'm trying to rebuild from residency and want no more inquiries or open credit! If they can't bend the rules and refund at least PART of the fees for customers who push more than 5 figures through their bank on a monthly basis ... then we can change banks. I got $135 refunded which I'm not thrilled with - but will do for now.

Master money manager -- that's me!
