There definitely is a price difference between chains, private companies, and independent maids. I went with a local private company as opposed to an independent maid because even though it was a little more expensive, they are insured. If a maid breaks something or steals something or ANYTHING like that, it will be replaced. Also, there are background checks, etc. run on everyone who works there. That was important to me given that I'm not home when they are there.

The woman we currently have has been with us for 3 years. It took about a year and a half before we gave her the keys. She also cleans for many of our friends and some of my mom's co-workers. She's also the aunt of a girl who works with my mom (and somewhat trackable). At this point I feel very safe with her have keys and being there while we're away. We don't have a dog but she loves our cat (who is still deciding what she thinks about this woman), so I also know that she'll take precausions while washing windows and such.

Although we don't really have anything steal-worthy, we did once have a girl who stole out of all things several of my worn sweaters. May be she thought that I had so much clothes I wouldn't notice them. We immediately fired her and had all locks changed. At least our current cleaning woman won't fit into my clothes.
