  • High Electric Bill

We our electric bill two months ago was super high -$657 dollars! During that billing cycle, we were gone for two weeks with all the lights but one shut off and the AC set on 82. Two weeks of it, our AC was broken with the compressor running constantly til we had it fixed. I verified with the AC company that there was no way it would cause our bill to be that high. The electric company says the meter is correct. Our bill from the month before was a normal one, and our bill the month after was also normal. The electric company says we used that much energy and tough luck. Is there any other recourse?

I would call their customer service line and just keep elevating it until you get someone that will help you.

Do you have any proof you were gone - was your mail or newspaper held? Things like that.

    That sucks!

      Unfortunately, no.

      Hijack:

When I moved to Richmond, I moved QUICKLY. I found a roommate, an apartment, and signed a contract in a day. Little did roomie and I know how much we would be screwed. We moved into a row house on the first floor with gas heat. Little did we know that there was a "shop" downstairs the same size as our apartment (1700 square feet) used by the landlords. They smoked pot down there and we could smell it all over the house. Once we got the $850 gas bill for our heat the second month, we knew that something was up. We called HVAC and the gas company and they found a ghetto rigged vent installed with duct tape about 4 feet from the furnace. They were stealing all the good heat to heat their workshop so even though we kept the thermostat at 67 and we froze our asses off, we still had to pay the $850.

We even threatened to take them to court, etc. We moved out the next week. It was a bad situation.

Was it an estimate or an actual read? I agree w/Cheri ... keep calling and keep elevating it.

It was an actual read, with a second person out to do an additional read. They said the only thing would do was to schedule an energy audit- that wont really help since the bill is already back to normal, but I will get one anyways.

SueAnne- Ours two months ago was also in the $600 range. - Since we are in the same city, that might make sense.

I agree w/ ladybug...ask you neighbors if they had unusually high bills that month.

I agree about asking a neighbor. Maybe it was especially hot while you were gone.

But, I would keep at it with the utility. My MIL had a HUGE energy bill this last winter. The kilowatt hours were amazing. It was an actual read and they ended up going out to her house and realizing that the meter was broken. It was just impossible to use that much electricity. That was a relief!

Really KC wife? That makes me wonder if the price per kilowatt hour was really high that month? But then again we live in different counties. My next door neighbor's are slightly weird but I know the family two doors down, I will ask them.

Do you have a pool or did you at your last house? Could the pool thermometer have been set too high while you were gone?

That electric bill is not something I would be excited to come home to!

The pool isnt heated, and we have it filtering 24/7 during the summer, so that hasnt changed either. The only other weird thing is that when I turn on the ceiling fan in the guest room, it stops after a minute and turns off at the breaker box. But it does that almost immediately, and if it is switched off at the breaker then it cant be using electric. These old houses! But then that is a whole different post.

Energy companies are crooks! Most of the places I have lived about once a year we would get a jacked up bill. Not possibly correct, but the engery company said too bad that's what the meter said. Personally I think they randomly adjust meters enough to jack peole out of money, but not often enough for any real proof, just confusion and the pressure to pay. Bastard crooks! Sorry

We have been running the pool 24/7 since May so that shouldnt have done it. I just checked our usage on line-

Our kilowatt per hour usage was 5700 from July 25-Aug24 ( we were gone over half that time), 2700 from Aug 24-Sept23 ( we were gone that whole time) but was only 2000 from June 26-July24 while we were there the whole time. I dont get it at all.

I keep trying to get someone upper level from Ga Power to call me back and it is not happening. I just filed a complaint with the public service commision

Keep at it! I hope you figure something out. The least they can do is come out and check your meter. I looked back through MIL's bills and she went from an average of 25 kwh/day to 140 kwh/day. I can't remember if it had been misread or if it was broken, but something was wrong and they fixed it.
