We had no family help and racked up about 220k at a private med school. They didn't give extra to cover spouse living expenses, so I worked at a sucky low paying job that paid about as much as dh's got from the loans for living expenses. We plan on not paying any of it back until dh is done with training. We too are planning on specializing. We hope that the boost in income will help us pay off the loans faster. During med school I choose not to look at the loan amounts or think about it either. Why torture yourself?
Wife to Hand Surgeon just out of training, mom to two lovely kittys and little boy, O, born in Sept 08.

We are fairly lucky. DH only had 90K in debt after residency. We were able to lock in a permanent low rate so our payment will always be $490 a month for the rest of the loan. Heck, that's as low as my car payment.

DH was complaining in the bookstore about how much a book was and this asshole was like, "hey, you're going to be a doctor and you'll be making ALL this money, who cares how much the book is!
This drives me crazy. No one seems to get this.

Me too. DH's salary is going to be hovering around minimum wage for the next 5-7 years, not to mention the loan payback when we finally get a real paycheck.
