  • Dry Cleaners Question

Could someone explain to me why women's clothes cost more to clean/press? If I take a pair of women's cotton pants and a shirt (that I could have washed and ironed myself at home) and a pair of men's cotton pants and a shirt to be laundered and pressed...the men's is 3/4 less expenssive. Likewise, if I take a women's wool suit and a men's wool suit (both lined) to be dry cleaned the same occurs. If there is a good reason for the difference in price I'll suck it up and pay it. Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

There is not a good reason - I used to work at a dry cleaners when I was 18. Basically the pricing started b/c the things they used were meant for men's sizes, so the tinier women's clothing required more handling. Over the years they now have appropriately sized things to work on mens clothes and womens clothes, but they've gotten away w/the pricing scheme for eons.

We're prone to trickier materials, but most dry cleaners have several different pricing schemes to account for the materials.

I haven't seen that around here. A sweater is a sweater and a pair of pants is a pair of pants. On the other hand after living here for 2.5 years, I have yet to find a decent dry cleaner. My biggest problem is being charged for ironing my clothes and putting them on a hanger. I'm not paying for a hanger, I'm paying for the cleaning. Or at least that's how it should work in theory.

I go to the $1.99 cleaner and they actually do a great job. I do remember hearing once that women's clothing was more expensive because they can't just "press" them because of all the tailoring and darts, etc. in womens clothing. If it's a PITA for me to iron it, I'm sure it is for them too.
