  • L&D show

Dh and I saw a preview for this the other day while we were watching a Frasier rerun:

In light of that thread about weird things that people do on L&D, I thought I'd post this!

I was trying to find this video last night when the original thread was up, but I couldn't find it. DH helped me find it tonight, so I had to share - it is all about the birth plan:

          Best. Video. Ever. Loved it.
I love how the nurse says right away, "C-section"
And the unatural nipple/won't bond thing/go to a good school... Lol!!
That scenario was about 90% of dh's patients.

We watched. Dh said it was like going to work, and that we needed to watch a different show afterwards to unwind!

The thing that bothers me - and I know reality shows are not real - is that the show depicts how people treat each other so disrespectfully.

The woman with the large baby was treated terribly by the nurse. I would be pissed if someone talked to me that way. The eco parents treated their nurse like crap.

Since when is it ok to treat people like sh*t? I know L&D is hardly the place to study politeness, but that doula needed a swift kick in the face--do you want to discuss first whether the nurse should check your dilation? Are you f-ing kidding me? On what knowledge can they base a decision on?

I just watched part of the first episode online, and totally agree with alison about the annoying disrespect. The show itself also seemed to play on stereotypes in a really disrespectful way. I guess that is reality TV.

After watching the first episode, it kind of seems like there's no way to give birth without drama. They made fun of the natural childbirthing couple (but like Alison said, the couple was having NONE of what the nurse said/recommended/advised for the baby's health and wouldn't budge), and the woman who had a large baby and had to have a C-section was chastised for wanting to try a vaginal birth instead of just immediately choosing a C.
This is all so... reassuring to my pregnant self. Heh heh.

I watched the first episode online last night and found it pretty entertaining. I probably wouldn't even think twice about a show like this if I wasn't pregnant, but since I'll be where they in the not so distant future I found it interesting. DH watched part of it with me as well. We aren't doing childbirth classes, so he used it as an educational tool. He'd pause the show and then tell me different things about the labor and delivery.

I have to say that I got a pretty good laugh when one of the girls picked up her cell phone and was talking on it while the nurse was checking her cervix. I was shocked, but DH's comment was that they see all kinds of crazy stuff like that! I couldn't even imagine doing that!

I watched this yesterday and the only thing that was confusing was when one of the women was getting an epidural and her husband was sitting in front of her holding her hands. I've delivered in 2 hospitals ( both dh's hospital where they knew he was a student and dr) and he had to sit in the far corner behind me. Only the nurse was allowed to hold me. Is that typical?

Otherwise, I thought it was a relatively accurate portrayal of L&D at least for me.

Russ was there for 2/3 of my spinals. And he held me for the two he was there for.
