Yeah, this is pretty much how my face looked when I watched it.

      1. Thanks, CNN. I now know what "twerking" is. I could have gone my whole life without that information.

      2. Why on earth did the Smiths take their (preteen?) daughter to the VMAs? How is that possibly an appropriate activity for a young girl? Even I know what happens at that awards ceremony. I would never let a child watch it, much less attend it. They should be embarrassed at their poor parenting skills.

      3. Miley Cyrus achieved exactly what I am sure that she was after. Attention. It had nothing to do with talent. Does she have any? I have no idea who she is, although I have heard of her in pop culture references. She is a Brittany/Lindsey clone of screw-up childhoods marred by weird parents who hypersexualized their children for money, followed by the predictable descent into descended into late adolescent moral compasslessness.

Not to be a killjoy, but the Will Smith shot is from a previous show - when Lady Gaga was performing. It's just being revived on the internets as a great reaction shot and falsely attributed to Miley's show.

Oh boo. It was so much funnier when put in the Miley context. Either way, we should all be sort of ashamed that we've taken this much time to talk about her/the VMAs

I can see the Smiths bringing their daughter since she's had at least one extremely popular song. Would I? No. But I can see how they could view it as permissible.

I am pretty sure this further validates my argument. On what planet is it appropriate to take a child to a Lady Gaga concert?

Glad your kid had some hit song. Clearly, the way to celebrate is to have her watch a music-and-porn show. Ugh.

But then, it is my understanding that the Smiths have an "open" marriage wherein it is acceptable to cheat on your spouse. At least, that is the illuminating bit of insight that has been recently offered on Drudgereport... I guess if you have no moral standards regarding your own sexual behavior, porn for your kid is OK.

The whole of them (them being the audience of the VMAs in general) clearly have far, far different parenting beliefs than the normal population. You do have to sort of question the parenting decisions of people who allowed their 11/12 y/o girl to release a song as inane as "Whip My Hair", the lyrics of which consisted of little more than gems such as: "I whip my hair back and forth, I whip my hair back and forth, I whip my hair back and forth"

I remember reading an article in HS (Newsweek maybe?) featuring the Cyrus family discussing how they were raising their daughter and how she understood that she didn't want to end up like Lindsey Lohan, etc. And here we are.

I didn't watch the show, just part of Miley's video after the fact. I did like this, though (probably because it's free on Prime so N wants to watch the "Babies" aka Rugrats all the time lately and it seems relevant to me)

All I can say is I love will smith. I whip my hair back and forth is super catchy and I'll take inane over disgusting any day. And I love seeing the smith family in any venue. I really am not a big hollywood or celebrity person and didn't know the mtv awards or whatever were on tv-- I don't follow Grammys or oscars or whatever. But I just like the whole smith family!

I saw the most awesome will smith interview with his son where they rapped together. Props to this family for at least keeping a nice, wholesome image in this day and age.

Miley--- tragedy. My dd was a big Hanna Montana person, and I told heresy back when the show started that it was too bad for Miley and her dad. That she was going to end up one way, that society would push her to this type of behavior. I wish I had been overly dramatic back then. My dd thought I was insane, bc miley in an interview swore she would never do any of that stuff... She was proud of her Disney image.

                      So predictable but still sad.

                      I'll end with:

                      WILL SMITH IS THE BOMB!!!
                      Peggy

Aloha from paradise! And the other side of training!

Also, Miley needs a tongue intervention. The amount that her tongue spent hanging out of her mouth really creeped me out and I was embarrassed for her.

I didn't watch the VMAs live (no way it competes with the Seattle/Portland MLS game or Breaking Bad in my house) but I switched over real quick to see NSYNC, and I too would pay ridiculous sums to see them on a reunion tour. Love them.

Miley is just the latest in the Britney - Lindsay - Kesha line. She's nothing new. She'll go away soon enough, and likely in some drug-induced tragic way.

I just got around to watching the NSYNC clip. You guys...that totally wasn't a reunion. That was the Justin Timberlake & Friends Show.

I don't get it. Is that a euphemism or metaphor for something, or just fluffy, no-meaning lyrics?
