june 19, 2006 -- BRITNEY Spears needs guidance. "Dateline" staffers were shocked when they showed up with Matt Lauer to interview Spears last week and found the pop star alone in her Malibu manse. "Neither of her publicists, Leslie Sloane Zelnick orNanci Ryder, showed up," said our source. Spears insisted on doing her own hair and makeup - a regrettable decision. Web sites derided her hair as a "rat's nest" and, when she started crying during the interview, one of her fake eyelashes fell off. "When [the NBC crew] got there, they thought they had the wrong day . . . During the interview, no one was there to rein things in," we're told. Spears, when asked about Kevin Federline being with a pregnant Shar Jackson when they first met, shot back, "Julia Roberts' husband had a pregnant wife when he hooked up with Julia, but no one ever talked about that!" Spears wore flip-flops, a see-through tank and micro-mini jeans. Reps tried to control the damage on Friday. "They asked NBC not to release footage to places like E!," said a source. I'd bet my last dollar that she gets institutionalized for "exhaustion."

Clearly, Brittany is not coping well with the combination of celebrity, new motherhood, marriage, and the legacy of some bad decisions. (The question is did she make some bad decisions or does she suffer from chronic bad judgment? Time will tell.)

Anyway, her marriage and life is rocky right now. Duh. My beef with Brittany (and so many other private and public figures) is why is there such shame in admitting that marriage is hard work and not always a lot of fun. She could have said, "Yeah, [gum chomping] we've definitely had a lot of changes over a short period of time. Marriage is hard, y'all! Still, we luuvvv each other and these babies. We're gonna try like hell to give this every shot we got [biting nail]. "

I guess what I'm seeking is a little "Truth in Marriage". Over the last few years, some of the shame of talking about how hard motherhood can be has ameliorated. (Felicity Huffman, I got your back! I love my kids fiercely too, but also feel completely overwhelmed at times! Thanks for your honesty, girl. )

Why people can't own up to the fact that sometimes *gasp* marriage is not always a lot of fun (although it is always worth it). I think that this interview would have been especially great for Brittany to admit this because so many young girls look up to her. In public and private life, I feel like DH and I are the only ones who talk openly about the fact that we are likely throw down from time to time. I used to think why do we have this problem. Now I know that this is bunk. But I digress....

My prediction is that Brittany will be the new Elizabeth Taylor, except she has a lot less class and style than La Liz.

Oh my. She is so not Demi Moore. Now that, Britney, is what a stylist can do for you. (And airbrushing, and photo touch-ups....). Even though it is an odd photo, it is a lot better than the Matt Lauer interview.

Wow. I'm actually starting to feel sorry for her. If that was the best photo they could get ... the smile is SO odd for the context of the photo (the jewelry, the NAKEDNESS). A girly smile just seems so off!

I honestly think her parents stopped the 'parenting' part of things when she started making them money, and left out a few important details.

Is this the one she did to fix her image after the terrible Lauer interview? I had heard she had done one but nobody picked it up - I hope this wasn't it!

I read that pictures from the shoot, other than the cover shot, were released without authorization from the photographer.

I'd like the one of her in a dress, holding SP, if her tush weren't half popping out of the back of the dress. Were they going for pregnant-as-sexy? Because it kinda came out as pregnant-as-slutty... Missed the mark, I think.

I think they airbrushed the crap out of her. She has looked a lot more round (and not in the belly) the last couple of times I have seen her. It's unfortunate that they have this need to retouch everything.

I think the black hair on her is really bad.
