I need a new all purpose bag. I am really bad about changing purses so the all purpose seems to work for me. I have a cute one ( that is getting elderly) now that is not humongous but can fit my laptop when i go to work, or can hold a few diapers and some baby food when I dont want to lug a separate diaper bag. I hope not to spend more than $100. Any suggestions from the fashion gurus?

I'm far from a fashion guru, but I bought this SUPER cheap bag for lugging around my laptop. It is made of really soft, non-shiny leather and has held up well.

I don't carry leather bags. With so many kiddos - and usually at least one baby/toddler/preschooler - I need something that can be washed!
I use Vera Bradley bags: http://www.verabradley.com/Site/Home.aspx?
Some of their prints are kind of matronly (especially the farther back in the line you go - the discontinued prints from years ago can make me shudder). But, in the last few years they have been using more and more, bright, youthful patterns for the bags. And, they have an ENORMOUS selection of types of purses and handbags (and, diaper bags) in tons of sizes. They are durable, machine washable, and cheap enough to own more than one. You choose the style you like and then the fabric you want it in. Dozens of styles and several current fabrics (if you find a store selling this brand they will usually also have some bags in stock with recently discontinued fabrics).

Styles that work well with varying amounts of kid gear:
-Villager
-Tote (I have one - it's huge - great for lots of baby/toddler stuff)
-Betsy (I have four of those I've accumulated)
-Vera
-Babybag
-Backpack
Besides the variety of fabrics available and the durability/washability I really like that most of the styles have so many darned POCKETS! The Betsy has SIX interior pockets. The Tote has six huge pockets inside and two outside (one zipped) with a keychain clip. The designers REALLY think about what we put in those things.
Rather than getting a diaper bag with my last baby I just used the Tote and it was very nice. I like the Betsy because it's big enough to hold my normal purse stuff AND two diapers and a traveling wipey packet along with a few small toddler/baby toys, a sippy cup, and a small container of Cheerios. And, it's not bigger than a normal, medium-sized handbag! And, yes, I've washed these things (hazards to putting sippy cups with milk in a purse!) - no fading, no shrinking, and no pilling.Who uses a machete to cut through red tape

The leather looks shiny in this picture, but my bag is a matte leather.
Edit to add:
Here is another SUPER cheap bag that looks to be on the large side that I think is cute.

Be carefull with oversize leather bags with big hardware, they tend to be very heavy on their own. I wouldn't recommend getting leather if you're planning on carrying your laptop in it. Unless you don't do a lot of the actual carrying and spend most of your time in the car. I would suggest going with something along the lines of Kate Spade totes (design-wise).
This bag from Overstock.com is actually listed as a diaper bag but I think it's very stylish and the matching accessories are cute.

My all-purpose bag is a leather Adrienne Vittadini with pretty decent sized hardware. It's on the heavy side, but I must say... I've used it EVERY DAY for going on six years now (that's not a typo) and it still looks brand new! I get compliments on it all the time. It was way outside of your price range but I got it on sale at Marshall's for about an eighth of the cost.
