  • Summer fashion for the not so tall and not so slim

Go for it, Vishenka! Dress me!

I am short, with thick legs and ankles. What do I wear?!

and piggyback that with tall and obese.

I am NOT wearing skirts all summer. So, if I can't wear shorts, capris, or skirts, what does that leave me with, huh?

I live in South Carolina, and it gets HOT here. I await your guidance, oh gurus.

First of all, I recommend skirts for the summer. Heidi, I think it is best not to wear shorts. Shorts don't look good on that many people, I'm afraid, skinny or not.

Heidi, why don't you like skirts? What fabrics and lengths have you been wearing?

For me, the problem recently has been chafing.

None if I can help it. I am NOT a girly girl. I like to get down on the ground with my kids, I like to play. I do not like to sit with my legs crossed. Plus, my sweaty legs rub together. TMI, I know, but you asked.

I don't like skirts. I don't go to church, and most of the time I am home with sticky hands all over me or playing at playgrounds or on the way to the pool or beach or out to eat or at the movies with my kids or shopping at Wal-Mart.

I don't like skirts, and you can't make me.

What about linen pants? They are super breezy and you won't be able to roll them up (linen won't stay rolled up for the most part). If you get wide leg, that will hide the parts you don't like, while creating a straight line. Some wedges or espadrilles and a cute top and you're all set. Once you find a pair that fits well, get it in a few colors.

              Vishenka! You're a genius!
I had a pair a long time ago, and they worked really well!
They're hard to find these days because capris have been in for awhile. And then a lot of them were linen capris... I will keep my eye out this year.

I was thinking the same thing, Alison, about most summer pants being capri length. I have linen pants, one pair being capris. I love them, especially the full-length version.

I think you really horrified her on that rolling up the pant leg part.

                  Lily was horrified too..

In my defense, I don't think I was embarrassing myself that much. It's Chicago. I wouldn't do the same in New York. Vishenka would walk a block behind me.

What are linen pants? Is that like khakis? Don't they get all wrinkly? What about pockets?

Seriously, no on the denim capris? Ever?

I think I am just going to have to refuse getting on the fashion train and remain a fashion tragedy forever. It isn't worth it if I have to wear long pants or skirts everyday with heels.

You don't have to wear heels every day! Not even with skirts! I wear linen or cotton skirts with fitted t-shirts and Rainbows ALL the time. It's cute, it's breezy, it's COMFY.

Long pants aren't always the hottest! The linen and some cottons are surprisably breathable!

I have to believe that linen pants would only accentuate my rolls of blubber.

                            They don't. You'd be surprised.

There are also times when cute is not the goal. Sometimes, dressed and mostly clean is a really good (high) bar to set.

There's no and I mean NO mother of anyone 10 or under who can wear a heel whilst with said child or children at least in a casual setting. (weddings and funerals don't count) (at least those of us who haven't managed that Dawkter's Wife Life; hire the help so that we can spa all day thing).

What I would wear to be sans child is completely different than what I would wear if I were with him and say needed to make sure that I could run after him. Heidi is completely right in saying that the last thing you want to be is handicapped in anyway if you child decides to- run across the street, climb into the dryer, climb up the closet shelves, etc.

But it's also easy to get into schleppy mommy look, too.

I love linen pants- I wear mine for yoga because they're white and I'll only be seen in white pants if I'm going to yoga. Drawstrings and low bellyed pants can be dangerous though because the 40 yo tummy (even one that hasn't been 9 months pregnant) doesn't look like the 20yo tummy, although even my 20 yo tummy in it's size 5 prime didn't look like the models tummy)
