I have a pair of dark purple heels and I have no clue what to wear them with. I've had them for over year and they haven't left my closet - the purple has really thrown me for a loop. They are similar to this style: http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/20912426.html but without the textured heel and platform. Any ideas fashionistas?

Ok - I do not have purple heels and I am not a fashionista BUT I do have red heels that I had in the closet for months. I wear them with basic colors like khaki, black, white, grey and tie them to a necklace that is red. How about buying/making a purple necklace?
Again, not a fashionista. Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I own two pairs of purple shoes.
I wear them with anything. BUT, I also dress pretty daringly fashion-wise. It's the norm for Milan .
Anyway with the purple sandals, I have even worn them with a teal dress. I will also wear them with any bold summer colors. I have a scarf from Tiffany's that is multicolored Tifffany Blue, Magenta, Yellow, White, Black, etc. I wear it as a shirt and I have often paired with with my purple strappy sandals (which incidentally have a big flower in front).
With the closed toe pumps, I wear them with jeans. They are suede so wintery. They have bronze studs and magenta knit detailing so I will wear them with anything with magenta or pink basically. I actually don't own any purple tops IIRC. Actually, I would probably pair them with bronze too. Depends on the top really.

I'm not going to address the style of the shoe so much as the color because it's just too many factors and I don't know your wardrobe.
That said, you don't have to stick to neutral clothes to wear a purple shoe! You could wear a purple shoe with jeans and a top in yellow, anything pastel, anything green or blue or teal, white, black, etc. Probably steer clear of anything too close to the color, red, vibrant colors like hot pink, etc. You could wear it with a dress of any of those colors or whatever. In fact, the shoes I wear the most are colored because they make your outfit so much more interesting.
If it helps, and I've been meaning to hand out this tip for a long time, buy a color wheel at an art/craft store and keep it stuck up on the inside of your closet door. Rotate it around and see what color combinations you like together. Color wheels even tell you what goes together. If they ever seem like "too much" then use the same colors but in muted tones.
