  • I can't believe I am posting this.....

The boys' school has a dinner/dance/silent auction each year that is a pretty big deal. DH and I have never gone because he has been on call the last two years on that night. This year he is off, so we are going. I don't know what to wear. I wear Dockers (or similar) to school and to church I wear dressier pants and a top, or maybe a skirt if I am singing. Nothing really dressy, though. DH abhors dressing up, but he will for this if I tell him to, and I would like to look nice as well. I bought two things today: thishttp://www5.jcpenney.com/jcp/Product...597|3600|50674 and some pants (can't find a link) that are black on black pinstriped. They are Jones Wear, the Jones New York brand sold at Penneys. They're fairly dressy looking. I have two tops that I am thinking about wearing. One is red crochet, long-sleeved, with a liner for the torso....arms are see through. The other is a button-up cream colored lace shirt, long-sleeved, and I wear a cream tank under it. I will try to post pics of these. Either of these would be *okay* to wear, but kinda boring. I would love to find a top that was flattering and didn't look like my grandma could wear it.

I can't decide about pants vs. skirt, and the weather may be the deciding factor on that one. If I wore the skirt, what do I wear on my legs? I don't love my legs....they are short compared to my height and muscle-y, but not super-toned. I don't mind wearing heels, but I don't like pointy toed shoes. I can't stand the thought of being bare-legged. I have noticed more tights lately.....could I wear black opaque tights? Maybe I should just wear the pants.

So....I'm looking for a top, black shoes, and something to put on my legs if I wear the skirt. Tops are hard for me because I am large-busted (38DDD) and long-waisted, but narrow-shouldered. Plus size stuff falls off my shoulders. Anything with a seam that is supposed to go under the bust line won't work, because it always ends up cutting right across my boobs. Button up stuff is also tricky because of the bust issue.

Have at it.....but please be gentle.

At the fancy/schmancy silent/live auction the school I worked at in CA had I would say 90% of the women were in nice pants. And that was CA in November. Most then wore dressier tops or a top and a scarf combo.

    What about something like this:

    Or this:

Good luck, have fun and don't spend too much money I always got sucked into some things and spent way to much!

I would ask around to see what normal attire is for this affair. I've been both way overdressed (think cocktail dress when other women were wearing snowman sweatshirts) and way underdressed (think dressy casual at an all out formal affair). If it isn't clear, I'd try to go with an outfit that could go either way.

I like the tops Cheri posted but I think a twin set would be a better fit for your figure. Look for something with stretch in it, so it will hug your torso instead of hanging off your chest creating a tent. An embelished cardigan (some simple tone on tone beading, etc.) will look festive and will be versatile enough to wear with other outfits.

I'm not crazy about black hose, I'd go with nude. You can get hose that slim through the leg all the way up. And high heels need not be pointy, there are plenty of rounder toe versions available.

But before you buy anything else, make sure to check what the general dress code has been in the past.
