Boots should be fine for a semi-formal occasion, for anything dressier go with shoes. Patent leather is really hot right now and black is easier to pair with several outfits than animal print. Bring several mix and match pieces. If you pair them differently and add a scarf or a necklace to each outfit, nobody will guess that those are the same pants from two days ago worn with a sweater from 3 days ago.
