    Re: Stand Mixers

Some other reviews that have me leaning:

I make bread weekly using a mixer and recently my Kitchenaid motor gave out after overheating. Though I prefer the looks of the Kitchenaid mixers (something more industrial about them), Cuisinart has addressed several of the key problems found in Kitchenaid mixers: not enough power, overly wide bowl shape, absene of timer/minimal speed control. The stronger motor is crucial if you're mixing bread doughs for minutes at a time. The taller, more narrow bowl shape prevents spilling. The timer function is tremendously useful. And the wider range of speeds (especially slow speeds) and gentle acceleration up to any speed, again, prevent spills and allow for more control.

Other features I like: the spill guard fits neatly and is ONE piece (again, unlike my old Kitchenaid); the lock feature clicks the top arm into place so you never run the risk of lifting from the top and having the bottom swing out; the smooth surfaces make for easy clean-up; the attachments all wash easily in the dishwasher.

I researched the Kitchenaid, Viking and several other brands of mixers. There were a lot of good and bad reviews of Kitchenaid, but what I was able to discover was that Kitchenaid used to be owned by Hobart Corp. At that time they were excellent mixers, but then they were purchased by Whirlpool. The mixers now have plastic gears. Although the higher-end models have metal gears (Pro series), they are still in a plastic housing. This decline in quality disturbs me. It is likely that most home cooks do not use it for heavy-duty usage, but those cooks who do have apparently found the products from Kitchenaid do not last (see negative reviews -- especially from the engineer who took several of them apart). The Viking seemed better made but was quite expensive. I settled on the Cuisinart after learning that its gears and gear housing are metal. Hopefully it will last a long time. I noticed that the Kitchanaid had only a one year warranty, but the Cuisinart has a FIVE year motor warranty, and a three year product warranty overall. It seemed a safer bet, so I got the Cuisinart. It performs very well. The timer is built right into the side of the mixer and is very handy. The mixer leaves very little batter unmixed even if you don't bother to scrape the bowl yourself. The range of speeds is very large -- from extremely slow (1) to incredibly fast (12). It is pretty quiet in its operation. I will have to continue using it to see how long it lasts, but so far it does a great job.

I know it isn't on your list, but I thought I'd add my own stand mixer. I have the DeLonghi. It's a 7 qt monster. It looks lovely, doens't breakdown or strain with anything - but it is loud. It has lots of attachments. We have the food processor and the blender. I think there is also a pasta machine and a meat grinder. We are hoping to use it for everything eventually and just have it spring load up in one corner of the kitchen.

Angie, thanks. The Cuisinart, as far as I can tell and from everything I have read, is a new and imprived DeLonghi.

          Oh.

          Well, now I feel relevant.

            Re: Stand Mixers

I have the 6qt-capacity Pro Kitchenaid mixer. I've had it for about four years now. It's a rather utilitarian gun-metal grey but I love it. It is very, very heavy. Anvil-heavy. But, you can pump out any manner of baked goods SO fast. Bread? Easy. Same with everything else I've tried. If you make a TON of dough when you do make dough it works beautifully. I also like that I can make a g-normous amount of whipped cream (for Thanksgiving and parties, etc.) in about two minutes flat if I want.

Only cons I've noticed so far: NOISE! The motor on this thing is noisy. And....The motor seems to get hot if you use it a great deal at one time on higher settings doing harder work. For instance, I made six loaves of bread from scratch one Saturday afternoon (I don't know what got into me - just wanted fresh bread ). I made the dough by making three portions of a doubled recipe. So, after cranking all that dough out with the dough hook and at a pretty fast speed (it kneads dough really well) I noticed the top of the machine was getting a bit hot. Haven't had a problem with the motor yet but just wanted to put that out there.

I bought the Artisan from Kohl's a few months ago and have been very happy with it. Between their sale and coupons, I got it for <$200. If it was something that I used everyday, I might have gone with the Cuisinart...although I do like the fact that the Artisan isn't too loud (and that it comes in so many colors ).

Would you consider a refurbished KitchenAid? They're around $120 on Amazon.com, I think. My mom got one a while back and it's wonderful. It had one scratch on the top of the mixer and that was it. Otherwise, it was flawless. I have a KitchenAid Artisan and love it.

That is a good idea -- you could do the refurbished one now and mull over the Cuisinart one for later.

See, porn for foodies. I lust after this mixer. I am so tempted to just go for it, and if it dies on my too quickly, I'll swear a lot and buy a Kitchenaid.

My in-laws even commented that we are going to have to have a big kitchen one day. Yeah, no shit. At least half the house. I loves me some kitchen gadgets.

Forget shoes. I won't buy another pair for three years. I just want a mixer.
I have no idea about anything cooking related, but you seriously made me laugh.

                      Re: Stand Mixers

So, I decided that I won't be buying a new mixer right now because my old crappy sunbeam one works, and I can use that for a few more years or until it dies because I have to be practical.

However, the lady at Sur La Table said she'd go with the Cuisinart in a heart beat. So, when I do have the money to afford one, that's what I'm going to do. Plus it will give me a few more years to check out its staying power and prowess. Sigh.

I hate being practical. It's going to be really hard to get a tax return and put it toward bills, again.

I have a KitchenAid Pro. MIL bought it for me (refurbished) a couple of years ago. It lives on my kitchen counter. No one is allowed to move it or use it without my permission. Which is never. But seriously, I love love love it!
