  • Vintage Fur: Okay or Passe?

I have weird views on fur too. I wouldn't do any sort of full fur coat. I just think they look so ostentatious and considering that I'm a PETA member, it would feel kinda wrong whether it's new or old. That said, I have owned things with fur lining like gloves and a sweatshirt. I guess in small doses and immune from poaching controversy, it's not as bad. But if I am going to say ALL fur is bad, I probably shouldn't be such a leather fan either.

    Le sigh...

First thought? It's been dead a long, long time. Go for it. My aunt had a rabbit coat for a while that I eventually had and got rid of. It was too damn hot. I would never buy new fur but as Stella points out, my gloves are lined with rabbit fur. :run:

I think a little fur lining is ok... but I agree with Stella. I wouldn't get a full fur coat. Unless you're living in a tundra.

I just don't care for the look of fur. I don't find it aesthetically pleasing and it certainly isn't slimming. It reminds me of women wearing big shouldered jackets in the eighties. Then again, I'm more of a blue jeans kind of gal.

Kelly, that was the second reason I never wore it. It was HUGE. It was my size but just really furry. And very 80s. I could have been a Dynasty extra. I'm guessing that by vintage you mean something earlier than the 70s or 80s and that might be a better style.

I see no problem with that, as long as you get to live the millionaire vampy lifestyle too.

Complete run with this tangent thought: Has anyone caught reruns of Dynasty or Dallas on the soap network?

            Yeah, me neither.

I *hear* that it is hysterical to watch Blake and Alexis throw down in all their haute couteur and glam makeup.

This is interesting bc I saw a vintage coat on ebay that I almost bought but ended up passing on it bc of the fur collar. I had the same thoughts... it's made the rounds so it's better than new fur (which I won't wear), but in the end it skeeved DH out too much I think (he used to be vegan). Plus he didn't really like the actual coat part... and it was one size too big for me so I would have had to get it altered.

I am still really undecided though. Had it been the right size I might have gone for it anyway (for $30 who cares?).

I would definitely go for it, but then again I'd go for new fur too. I do have a shearling that I wear when it gets really cold. I think when fur is done right it can look amazing. I guess since I've been wearing it since infancy, I've gotten desensitized to it.

For me -- I see fur as appropriate ONLY for people of a certain age. I saw my grandmother in her mink (I think she had 4 ) and I smiled. She looked so beautiful -- like a 40s film star in my opinion.

Granted I was raised in the Northwest where you might get harassed if wear fur -- but I see it on the street and it makes me sad.

Well, I was all anti-fur until December 2004: Perm, Russia.

You better believe this hypocrite went and bought herself a mink hat. I'm sorry, if you're hitting negative temps for more than five days, F the down parka (speaking of totally unattactive) and get thee to warmth.

Now, as for the source of the fur- for new I'd only go w/ mink. They're exceptionally unattractive creatures anyway.

I have no problem wearing what it actually a rodent.

Rabbits? It's not like they're endangered. I have a few rabbit fur items. Not helping me too much here in So. Texas though.

I get to wear my mink hat about once a year these days. Makes me sad.
