Ya'll are funny! I have always worn scrubs to work until two years ago. Now I wear whatever I want with a lab coat. Some days I wear jeans and a nice shirt, soemdays pants or skirts, and occasionally a dress! It is wonderful to be the boss, especially since I have no fashion sense and no $$$$.

The occasion: My stepdaughter and her fiance are going to get married in COsta Rica . They are going to have a reception when they get back. They are in Kansas City, MO. The reception is at The Kansas City Club. The invitation says drinks and appetizers (no dinner) and dress is "smart casual",

And for you KC peeps, DH and I will be staying a a hotel within walking distance of the The Kansas City Club, which is on Baltimore Ave. I can't find the name of the hotel but will post it later, June 18-June20.

I have totally stayed out of this conversation because I am definitely not the fashion-ista in my family. But Luanne given the location I would definitely stay away from jeans, most country clubs in the KC area (including the one my reception was at) are strictly no jeans.

Definitely will vary by industry, too. Book publishing pays such crap that there's no way they could expect you to dress at any specific price point. Plus it's got a high tolerance for the creative. Even at Big Venerated Publishing House, one of my assistants had a big fuchsia streak in her hair, roller derby on the weekends, etc. She rocked her job and was promoted ASAP, though, and deservedly so.

DC cut throat is different- individuality is a risk, not an asset in most governmental roles.

and I'm quite sure that Lily's closed-toed pumps were duly noted.

Luanne, I just realized its not a country club but looking at their website it looks pretty high class so I would still stay away from jeans. I wish we were going to be in KC that weekend.

Luanne, if you decide you'd like company while shopping, let me know. If you'd be comfortable in a summer dress, I'd go that route, if not, well cut lined linen pants would work too.

We *may* be just back from our Ohio extravaganza .... I'll keep in touch.

No problem, I would never wear jeans given the occasion (though DH might want to). She is also a Harvard graduate, and I'm sure half of the guests will be from the local "Harvard Club".

Hey Julie, if I EVER get this fluffy weight off, I desperately need you to meet me at Woodbury. I've been chunky and/or pregnant for so long I don't know how to dress myself anymore. All I wear anymore is t-shirts and yoga pants from Target. <ducking out of this thread> (where's the little emoticon who runs away leaving a cloud in its wake?)

Luanne, have fun finding an outfit! I hate all these crazy terms for what to wear.
