  • Maxi dresses

What do you think of them? I have not worn a dress in so long. I am clueless.

I have to get a dress for a wedding. The wedding is in June but I have to shop this week because my parents are here and can watch the baby.
It will be pretty casual as weddings go, but I don't want to look stupid casual
I am considering a long dress because then, if my fashion sense is correct, I can wear flat sandals. I want to wear flats because a) I hate heels, b) I'll be chasing a toddler, c) I don't want shoes that will sink into the grass, d) I need to buy new shoes anyway and if I get flats I will wear them more.

I don't own any but that's because I am only 5ft 5 and I think it may not look so hot. Don't get me wrong, they look great on a lot of people and I really do like them. However, for a wedding it may be too casual if it is an evening event...but that depends on how casual the wedding will be I suppose...

The wedding is in Napa, CA and is outdoors.
I think I am 5 ft 6 (or maybe 5ft 7) and slim. Maybe you do need to be taller to pull it off?

I think you can pull them off with your height. It doesn't hurt to try. I also think CA is the perfect place to wear them. I was just in Bloomies recently also shopping for a dress for a wedding and saw some great maxi dresses in the evening wear section. I wish I could pull them off but I'm barely 5'3"

I think you're tall enough and since you are slim I bet it will look great. The real kicker is how casual the wedding will be...and the pattern of the dress (or were you thinking of going with a solid?!). I have an image in my mind of an outdoors Cali-casual wedding in Napa (with you sipping a glass of wine of course)...but if this is the actual vision of the wedding I do not know ???

I'm not much help with the dress but is the wedding at a winery? Which one would tell me a lot about the casual/fancy level.

You don't have to be tall to pull off a maxi dress! You just have to find the right one. I'm only 5'3" and have an hourglass figure, so I didn't expect it would be a flattering style on me (my fear was that it would cling to the wide part of the hourglass and not the narrow part...). However, I found one at Arden B that fits perfectly! This one only in brighter colors.

As for formality... I'd say it's appropriate for an outdoor wedding that doesn't appear to be formal. The invitation style and wording should indicate formality.

But regardless if you decide to wear one to the wedding, I think you should at least try one or two maxi dresses on!

The wedding is at a winery which also happens to be their home. The invitation gives no clue as to formality but we think, knowing the couple in question, that it will be casual. Exactly as Frowe pictured I hope, with me floating around in my dress colorful enough to hide wine and baby-related stains!
I'll try some on and see if it feels right, thanks for the input.

Yeah, with your figure I think you'll really rock it plus it'll suit your style and not look too froufy and fake on you. I love the idea of the flat sandals too. Paint your nails a cute color! (DISCLAIMER: I am the biggest fashion moron that ever failed to grasp the rudiments of dressing. Take my opinion at your own risk, I'm just sayin' what I think sounds cute/pretty. )

Kirsty, Alison said exactly what I was thinking!

Oh Alison...give yourself a break!! I think you rock a t-shirt & shorts better than most!

                        Ha! Why, thankee.

The real question is, what's Jack wearing? I have a white button-up shirt and gray slacks that Eddy wore to a wedding at around 18 months old. Want them?

Is "maxi dress" the new lingo for "long dress"? Does the renaming allow them to charge more money?
