Middle seat placement depends on the make of the car (your owner's manual will say whether or not it is safe to have a babyseat back there). My DH is also a big guy (sounds VERY similar in size to DrK). Unfortunately, other than a mini van or huge SUV, the rear facing baby seat has had to go behind the passenger seat and he just can't move that seat all the way back if I'm driving. The good news is, if you're pregnant with a singleton, chances are that child #1 may be front facing before another comes along.

We can put the baby seat in the middle of my SUV for us both to drive but not DH's car, he just doesn't fit. But really if the car has the LATCH system moving the seat isn't a big deal. When we take car trips in DH's car he has to switch the car seat when we switch drivers and it takes him less then 5 minutes each time.Wife to NSG out of training, mom to 2, 10 & 8, and a beagle with wings.

When Baby M II comes along Adele will have to go forward facing in both cars and will sit behind DH. Which is fine with me, I've been trying to get him to let me turn her around for quite some time but she's only 22 1/2 pounds and he really wants her to stay rear facing as long as possible.
I should add that neither of us like the drive of a mini van and since we only plan to have 2 we don't see any reason for one.Wife to NSG out of training, mom to 2, 10 & 8, and a beagle with wings.

Didn't read all the replies, but wanted to say I LOVE my car! It's a Mazda 6 Wagon. They don't make them anymore....I guess the Mazda 5 is the replacement?? I like the Mazda 5....not as much as my wagon though! I like the VW Jetta wagon too....they we're making them when I got mine...otherwise I think I'd have gone with the Jetta wagon in the diesel.Mom of 3, Veterinarian

Love my highlander!!! Have had it for 8 years and no problems. Only repairs have been from accidents. oops! Have no idea about the childs seat thing, but think it must be ok...mommies seem to be driving them all around.
Also, my dh had to get a car this past year. We went to CARMAX...it was awesome, especially if you are looking for an SUV. He got a monster durango, with DVD player etcfor next to nothing, sefiously. You could not even tell it had been used. It was also during the gas crisis so everyone was dumping SUVs, but still a car that seats 8 with 30,000 miles for less than a KIA...not a bad deal.
