Hickory is a shortish drive to Blowing Rock, which is a really fun town. If you head there when the leaves are changing, it would make for a great vacation. The road from Hickory to just before Blowing Rock is lined with a gazillion furniture stores.

I'm definitely at a point where I know that I have to custom order a number of pieces. One of the reasons we like Lee is that they let you swap various designs from a bunch of models into a "customized" piece and also have tons of fabric options.

We even visited Amish furniture places last summer but most of their designs are a bit too bulky. They can tweak what they already do but couldn't give me a straight answer or a price on a totally custom work. A friend who works with furniture manufacturer in NY said that the dinning room table I want would be at least $5-6K and that's if he doesn't charge me for design but only labor and material.

I'm thinking we should probably make the trip next year though, unless we can get a room's worth of stuff for the price of one piece I've been quoted so far. DH has time off in early December but I'm not sure if we'll have adequate funds by then.

High Point prices are generally 40% below the MSRP (or more if they have special sales) so you'll probably come out ahead if you pay shipping charges from HP rather than pay full retail in your area. I don't think you'll have to worry about the quality...just make sure you get it from a reputable dealer in case there is any damage during transit.

We spent a week in Blowing Rock last month. It is a really cute little town with Boone next door and Asheville not too far. Chetola Resort is a nice place to stay and rental cabins/houses are really reasonable.

Furnitureland South is truly a monstrous store. You really have to have an idea of what you want before you go there or else you'll be there for days.
