It does sound from the description that a festive sari would be an option. In case you decide to go with a dress after all, I like these two options:

I would also look into Tadashi and Carmen Marc Valvo dresses, they often have more support in their structure.

As for masks, I was thinking something along the Venetian ones. You can also just wear a black cape that hides you neck or even head (hood) to toe and a really elaborate Venetian mask.

Ditto that plus size statement, moonlight. Finding something "normal" sized is hard enough...let alone over a 14. Thankfully(?) the clothing now a days, doesn't look like old granny wear!!
When we shredded all our credit cards last year, lane Bryant was the only one I kept because their clothing wasn't as old granny looking
I can now say tho...I don't need the LB card anymore, but it is a daily struggle!

ITA! And FWIW, after I lost the weight, I missed LB... I loved their pants. Sorry for the hijack...as for the dresses, I love the long brown one...but they are both beautiful, you are going to look stunning!

I'm becoming less keen on the sari idea. I don't want to end up looking like someone who wears a sari to formal events b/c I'm married to an Indian guy .... plus, I'm not exactly a pro at putting them on. MIL usually dresses me (embarrassing, but it's how it's done), and when *she* does it I feel totally secure ... me ... oh ... I'm imagining 9 yards of gorgeous fabric unraveling when some drunk chick steps on my hem ...

I just ordered $800 worth of dresses so I can have a mini fashion show in my bedroom. DH is willing to go to this stag, but I think that would be kind of weird. I'm really not interested in A) being perceived as antisocial or B) having him all dressed up in a tux hanging out with a bunch of interesting female colleagues looking their best and then having to go home to the chubby, lactating wife.

I thought this...that's why I wasn't hip on the idea. I can't stand wearing traditional clothing from my husbands culture, unless I'm going to be in the Mid East. I wear a scarf, but everything else is what you'd buy @ the mall state side.

I sure hope you find a dress that looks great and feels great...
if you go w/along one, you can always sneak & wear mandals

BTW I recall once when Uma Thurman said that she had to account for her lactating breasts growing throughout the evening of the Oscars once, so that she wouldn't be completely busting out by the end of the night...so keep in mind the girls will be a growing take extra nursing pads!

It's so easy to decline on this type of event when the wardrobe hunt is or could be really annoying. Good For You in deciding to push on, looking for the right dress, taking advantage of a black tie night with DH, and enjoying yourself. GL! I really hope you find something great!

I ordered the full-length brown one everyone liked, a black one that I hadn't found / posted before, and the one with the "ribbon" look. That one will either be awful or work really well for this AND Indian functions (which I have a lot more of than black tie), so I figured it's worth trying it out.
